The Role
We are looking for a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Manager to support the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre’s Skin and Oral theme and Informatics and Precision Care theme. The PPIE Manager will ensure meaningful public representation is embedded across all activities in the two BRC Research Themes. This exciting new post will deliver the PPIE strategy and action plan for both BRC Research Themes. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the two BRC Research Themes.
You will have excellent communication and intrapersonal skills to engage a wide range of stakeholders including members of the public, patients and local community groups. You will be able to use your initiative and creativity to achieve the PPIE objectives of the BRC.
The main purpose of this post is to work within two Research Themes of the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC):
• Informatics and Precision Care for an Ageing Population
• Skin disease, oral disease and immunogenomics
The post will deliver the patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) strategy and related operational activity for both BRC Research Themes. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the two BRC Research Themes. Line management will be undertaken by Professor Alastair Burt, Theme Lead for Informatics and Precision Care for an Ageing Population. Supervision and ongoing support will also be provided by Dr. Neil Rajan (PPIE Theme Lead for Skin disease, oral disease and immunogenomics) and Dr Chris Lamb (PPIE Theme Lead for Informatics and Precision Care for an Ageing Population).
The postholder will provide diverse opportunities for patients and members of the public to be involved, making sure that both BRC Themes research is informed by the broadest range of experiences.
This is a full time post, fixed term for three year, however applications for part time/flexiable working will be considered, please state your desired working arrangements in your application.

Key activity will include:
• Overseeing the delivery of PPIE across the portfolio of the two BRC Research Themes research studies to align with strategic PPIE objectives.
• Working with academic leads and researchers in the BRC Research Themes, develop innovative PPIE activities to widen opportunities for patient and public involvement in our research and promote diversity.
• Building capacity and expertise in PPIE through development of training and learning resources, and provision of expert guidance and advice, including evaluation approaches and reporting.
• Working collaboratively and in partnership with the NIHR Newcastle BRC PPIE Manager and the two BRC research theme PPIE Leads to ensure that PPIE activity aligns with the National Standards for PPIE and with best practice.
• Developing and maintaining relationships and collaborations with key external stakeholders including the public, patient groups and wider voluntary and community sectors.
Key Accountabilities
- Proactively identify public involvement and engagement opportunities for the strategic development of the two BRC Research Themes and PPIE programmes, to enable delivery of outstanding and exemplary PPIE activity.
- Responsible for liaising with and building strong relationships with public contributors, including acting as point of contact, supporting their attendance at meetings, provision of training as needed and providing guidance on remuneration.
- Work closely with Theme researchers to develop evaluation processes to enable assessment of PPIE impact for reporting purposes and oversee their implementation across the Themes activities.
- Responsible for the collation and management of information about our PPIE activity, including evaluation metrics, and drafting annual reports.
- Take an active role in local, regional & national PPIE networks, including relevant patient groups/organisations, voluntary and community sectors, to share learning from our activities and maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practice in PPIE.
- Proactively identify public engagement opportunities and lead the development and delivery of a programme of activities, with a focus on novel and innovative approaches that will promote awareness of the two BRC Research Themes related research among population groups who are underserved by research.
- Provide guidance on the use of accessible language for the website and written materials, such as plain English summaries, patient information sheets and for feedback to public contributors.
- Develop engagement materials such as reports, website content and other written materials to ensure optimal external visibility of the two BRC Research Themes PPIE. Facilitate patient and public involvement in disseminating research findings to a wide range of audiences, including professionals, policy makers, third sector and the public.
- Manage the Themes PPIE budget and provide effective financial management in support of PPIE activity. This will involve working with the Theme administrator to develop budget plans, costing and forecasting.
- Be aware of and comply with current data protection legislation, and ensure that all activity, data collection and management comply with these demands.
- Contribute to the delivery of wider NIHR Newcastle BRC and two BRC Research Themes events to support and enable inclusion of patients and public.
