Researcher within bioinformatics for genomic engineering

At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a position as a researcher within bioinformatics for genomic engineering. The position is affiliated to an externally financed project. The first 3 years the position is financed by the Research Council of Norway, associated with the project «CRISPR-Cas9 corrected T cells for personalized therapy».

About the Department

Digitization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of the society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of the society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory and visualization. We are also building up a group in computer science didactics. The department offers education for the future at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The department is in rapid growth regarding its number of students, research directions, and employees. We have today about 900 students, and 150 employees, among which 37 are faculty and 70 PhD candidates. We have established the Center for Data Science (CEDAS) as an important extension of our research and education activities.

About the project/work tasks:

All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research and teaching. The working environment for this position will be at the Valen bioinformatics research group.

The main challenge of genomic engineering for humans is the danger of introducing off-target mutations – editing the genome in locations other than the intended site. While many in vivo and in vitro methods allow us to detect off-targets and identify at which sites edits have been made in the genome these are not preventative measures, merely a report of the outcome. Furthermore, it is challenging to apply these methods as they require considerable laboratory effort and are usually not prioritized, particularly when the number of guide RNAs that have to be evaluated is large. This project aims to optimize computational off-target prediction through novel algorithmic approaches.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within bioinformatics prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Ability to attract external research funding must be documented.
  • Previous experience from developing computational approaches for CRISPR guide RNA design and for analyzing high-throughput data from CRISPR experiments is a requirement.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
  • In assessing the candidates, a review of both the quality and the breadth of the candidate’s research will be conducted.
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.

The following premise forms the basis for the post as research scientist:

  • The researcher will be a member of the research group in which the subject area of the position belongs.
  • Salary expenses should as far as possible be 100 % externally financed.
  • The researcher will actively contribute to obtaining external project funding for the research group to both themselves and others, from The Research Council of Norway, the EU as well as other sources.
  • The research activity is expected to be funded by the projects the researcher and the research group, are working on.
  • The head of department may instruct the researcher to work towards specific research projects.
  • The researcher may partake in duties, participate in committees etc. within the UiB.
  • The researcher is normally not obliged to teach but is expected to partake in the supervision of masters and PhD students, to the extent that this is a natural part of the work in the research group.
  • The foundation for the position will no longer exist if project funding ceases, and the new law on Government employees etc. regarding termination of employment and preferential rights will be applied.

We can offer:

  • Salary at pay grade 62 – 65 (code 1109/pay range 24, alternative 6) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 563 900 -594 300 . For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. Further promotions are made according to length of service
