Project: Sistemi Cibernetici Collaborativi – Robot Teleoperativo 2
Commitment & contract: Postdoctoral, until 31st December 2023
Location: Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS), IIT
WHO WE ARE
At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarter is strictly inter-connected with our 11 centres around Italy and two outer-stations based in the US for a truly interdisciplinary experience.
YOUR TEAM
You’d be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where researchers and engineers in various areas of robotics, mechanical engineering and software engineering collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research. In this team you will have the opportunity to collaborate and pursue research and development in a funded project focused on advanced teleoperation.
The Humanoids and Human Centred Mechatronics (HHCM) Research line is coordinated by Nikos Tsagarakis, who has extensive experience in Robotics and Mechatronics.
The research of the team working on this project focuses on creating the next-generation bimanual teleoperation systems for intuitive and dexterous haptic tele-manipulation in hazard-prone industries, with the aim of reducing risks to workers’ health and safety. Over the years our team has built a solid foundation of technologies including but not limited to extensive know-how on key enabling technologies for teleoperation and haptic feedback systems, such as design and control of actuation and sensing systems, desktop and exoskeleton haptic devices, embedded control systems and cutting-edge teleoperation software. Your goal will be to conduct research and implement teleoperation control strategies with our advanced tele-manipulation system consisting of a dual-arm force feedback master station and a dual-arm slave manipulator mounted on a quadruped robot. Teleoperation will be through a highly immersive setup integrating various control modes spanning from standard bilateral teleoperation to semi-autonomous slave control and manipulation schemes.
Within this team, your main responsibilities will be:
- Research and develop novel teleoperation schemes and control algorithms for highly intuitive, bimanual dexterous teleoperation for realistic scenarios.
- Collaborate in a proactive and hands-on manner with the rest of the team to integrate this research in our existing advanced teleoperation systems, which include a high performance teleoperation software architecture, custom force feedback devices, hand exoskeletons and slave robots.
- Proactively organize research activities in the assigned areas, accomplish project deliverables as required and disseminate the research through high quality publications, reports and demonstrations.
This open position is financed by the Italian Worker’s Compensation Authority (INAIL) within the “Cybernetic Collaborative Systems – Robot Teleoperativo 2” project.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU SHINE
- A PhD degree in an area relevant to haptics, bilateral dexterous teleoperation, advanced robot control, human robot interaction, etc.
- Experience in the development of algorithms for robot control, teleoperation or haptic feedback systems and their implementation with object-oriented languages e.g. C++ is necessary.
- A strong background on robot kinematics and dynamics with previous practical implementation of robot control (e.g., cartesian and joint space control, force control, torque control, etc.), using available C++ libraries such as KDL, RBDL, etc.
- Documented experience and a strong portfolio of practical implementations in the area of your experience through publications, repositories and previous demonstrations is essential.
- Excellent academic writing and oral presentation skills are necessary.
- Available to attend conferences, visit fieldworks, participate in meetings and other events.
- A strong publication record
- The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data
- Good command in spoken and written English
EXTRA AWESOME
- Experience in mechanism analysis (kinematic/dynamic), modelling and optimization will be highly appreciated.
- Experience with software development tools such as QT, and specialized haptics libraries such as CHAI3D or others is very welcome.
- A general interest and capacity to present clearly scientific and engineering achievements by producing high quality edited media, such as engaging videos and images of your work.
- Strong problem-solving attitude
- High motivation to learn
- Spirit of innovation and creativity
- Good in time and priority management
- Ability to work in a challenging and international environment
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
