Position Overview

The Office of Indigenous, Local & Global Health in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Limited Term Indigenous Health Education/Research Coordinator for approximately 2 years.

The Indigenous Program Coordinator supports the Assistant Dean and Directors of the Indigenous Health Program (IHP), Cumming School of Medicine.  Reporting to the IHP Education Director and supported by the Manager, ILGH, the Coordinator delivers education programs, research, and activities focused on improving Indigenous health outcomes and promoting lifelong learning for health care professions.  The IHP engages across CSM to build Indigenous capacity, and the coordinator acts as a resource and performs a variety of duties supporting initiatives for Indigenous health program development to reflect Indigenous ways of knowing, developing Indigenous competencies, and critical thinking about Indigenous health education and research.  Working independently, the coordinator supports and delivers the education and research activities within ILGH, contributing to culturally safe and positive learning and research environments. In consultation with ILGH leadership, the coordinator supports the Indigenous group’s research projects, supporting multiple investigators, and engaging with Elders and Indigenous communities.

The coordinator provides logistical support for the IHP, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing written correspondence, including letters, reports, CVs, and presentations.  Other logistical support includes coordinating meetings and events, managing program budgets and expenses, and supporting special projects and initiatives.

This is a full-time position with normal work hours, but the incumbent may be required to work evenings or weekends to accommodate community engagement.  Limited travel to community partner sites within and outside Calgary may be required occasionally.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Curriculum Support
    • Support faculty and staff on instructional design, assessment strategies, best practices in the classroom, and the integration of learning technologies related to implementing Indigenous content
    • Identify and suggest resources and supports to enhance Indigenous teaching and the instructional setting to support student academic success
    • Designs and produces learning materials in a variety of formats to support teaching, learning, and communication needs related to Indigenous content
    • Engages across CSM with faculty and students, as well as Elders and community partners on how to create positive learning environments that are respectful of Indigenous students’ cultures and identities
    • Develop and deliver development training(s) for faculty and staff to enhance awareness and understanding of Indigenous experiences in postsecondary institutions.
    • Facilitate engaging non-Indigenous faculty and scholars, and researchers with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous communities and organizations
  • Project Management
    • Bridges Indigenous ways of knowing and Western principles of qualitative inquiry when developing culturally appropriate research methods
    • Undertakes research activities including the design and methodology, collection, analysis, and evaluations with a strong focus on relational community engagement
    • Coordinates and undertakes data collection (e.g., survey based, literature reviews, interviews, focus groups and sharing circles, and engaging with Elders and communities)
    • Works with project teams to contribute ideas and assist with developing evaluation frameworks
    • Analyzes quantitative and qualitative data and data sets; interpreting data and developing conclusions based on the analyses and interpretation of data into themes, preparing specialized reports for the Indigenous team and other partner groups utilizing communication and research tools
  • Program Administration
    • Practices and teaches culturally appropriate ways of engaging Indigenous communities
    • Evaluates services and program success, conducting environmental scans, assessing data and results, and reporting on programs
    • Coordinates engagement with Indigenous Elders and community, incorporating Indigenous ways and knowing to create a safe space for knowledge exchange
    • Network among established and new Indigenous Health researchers
    • Prepares pre-community documents and information packages for engagement activities
    • Facilitates the dissemination of information and knowledge related to projects, programs, and initiatives under the identified mandate areas through a variety of vehicles
    • Develops and fosters relationships with key internal and external stakeholders necessary to build networks and support projects
    • Assist with the preparation of abstracts, reports, manuscripts, and presentations
    • Review and analyze funding proposals for the Indigenous team and coordinate grant applications
    • Monitors program budgets, processes expenses, and prepares reports
    • Prepares written communications including letters of reference, CV updates, Annual Reports, etc.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in a health related or research related field, Masters’ degree preferred
  • Experience in healthcare preferred, with experience handling complex health education/research projects and knowledge of conducting culturally safe community-based research with Indigenous people through participation in research and/or research implementation
  • Knowledge about Indigenous peoples, including culture, health issues, social, economic, and political issues affecting Indigenous communities, to support and facilitate improved relations with Indigenous residents and organizations
  • Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants, however strong consideration will be given to candidates who are non-Indigenous persons with demonstrated strong expertise; knowledge, and experience in Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being, Indigenous Health, and education.
  • Demonstrate an ability to learn and be self-directed skills
  • Ability to think strategically and respond quickly to multiple priorities and deadlines. The candidate will have an analytical mind, and the ability to adapt and be creative in addressing complex issues
  • Knowledge of U of C and other post-secondary institutional programs, particularly regarding Indigenous programs and resources
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Indigenous communities focused on health and education services as well as with the traditional community
  • Previous experience and demonstrated successes in fostering a collaborative environment within cross-functional departments
  • Political acumen to provide support and assistance on matters that are sensitive or complex in nature and require a high level of analytical skill, independence, and initiative to execute
  • Ability to maintain composure under heavy workload, frequent interruptions, and conflicting priorities
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and extracting complex information, with the skill to think logically, identify anomalies, and potentially invalid data, to determine the scope of impact, evaluate risks/consequences, develop creative solutions, act expeditiously; and understand the factors associated with decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team or project setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, and an awareness and use of course management systems and research management systems and software
  • High degree of commitment to the advancement of Indigenous people’s health and well-being
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and effective written and oral communication skills
