This course will discuss the importance of the pharmaceutical quality of medicinal products including establishment of quality control assays and specifications, bioequivalence testing of generic drugs, special considerations for biopharmaceutical products, nanomedicines, vaccines and radiopharmaceuticals, and the regulatory process in Canada with a focus on drug quality. In addition, the course will discuss the application of analytical techniques in clinical laboratory medicine with a focus on commonly used tests to monitor patient health and the therapeutic use of drugs, including tests for personalized drug therapy. The course includes a laboratory that will present drug formulation and related quality control issues.
Description of duties:
Preparation and presentation of 6 hours of lectures on general principles of pharmaceutical quality, 4 hours of lectures on drug quality of specaialized drug products (vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, nanomedicines, radiopharmaceuticals) and 8 hours of lectures on clinical laboratory medicine technologies. Holding “office hours” for students to provide further explanation of the lecture material. Coordinating the lecture component of the course including posting of lecture notes onto the course website, communicating with students, liason with course support staff to schedule lectures, examinations and address other other administrative aspets of the lecture component of the course. Liason with the coordinator of the laboratory component of the course. Preparation of two mid-term tests and one final examination and any make-up or supplemental examinations as required. Arranging with course support for marking of examinations and posting/submission of marks. Review of student marks and examinations as needed.
Note on Potential Public Health Restrictions Impact: The course is planned for in-person lectures and examinations for Fall 2022 based on the current public health restrictions. Should changes in public health restrictions require remote delivery, the lectures will need to be presented asynchronously on-line on Quercus as Powerpoint slides with embedded recorded audio, office houurs will be on-line and tests and examinations will be delivered on Quercus with ProctorU invigilation. The applicant must be familiar with these technologise in the event that this is necessary.

Estimated TA support: Approximately 40 hours
Class schedule: 18 hours of lectures presented in 14 sessions (14 sessions of 1 hour and 2 sessions of 2 hours)
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022-December 31, 2022
Salary: $6,6367 (inclusive of 4% vacation pay).

Minimum qualifications: Applicants should at a minimum, possess a BSc or PharmD degree and familiarity with the content area. Preferential consideration will be given to candidates with a post-graduate degree and/or teaching experience at the University level. The successful candidate must demonstrate effective organization, time management and communication skills and be flexible and adaptable.
