At the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences at Stockholm University, research and education is conducted in an international environment. The subject areas are Ecology and Evolution, Ecotoxicology, Marine Biology, Plant Physiology and Plant Systematics. Some of the research has direct environmental and societal relevance and the approach is often broad and interdisciplinary. About 140 people are working at the Department, of which ca. 35 are teachers and researchers and 40 are PhD students.

Project description
The position will be associated with the project PROMISE (Improved Ecological Risk Assessment of contaminated sediments in Sweden), funded by the Swedish Environmental Agency. The aim is to improve our current methods for ecological risk assessment (ERA) of contaminated sediments. The main objective is to conduct a site-specific risk assessment of Oskarshamn’s outer harbor, on the SE Baltic Sea. The inner harbor has recently been remediated through dredging. The outer harbor, however, has not been remediated and still poses a risk of spreading contaminants to the Baltic Sea.

In the project we have gathered data from previous ecotoxicological investigations in the Oskarshamn harbor, including traditional endpoints such as hazard quotients and new more ecological endpoints (sediment-living microorganisms). We now wish to compare these measurement endpoints and assess which are most / least relevant and applicable for future ERAs of contaminated sediments in Sweden.

For this position we are looking for a researcher with experience in ecotoxicology, sediment ecology, methods for ecological risk assessment (ERA) to assess the spreading risks of contaminants and eventual toxicity risks to sediment-living organisms and humans.

Main responsibilities
The position involves 100 % research, with field and lab work and ERA risk calculations from previous and ongoing experiments. The candidate should have previous strong experience in sediment-ecotoxicology and ecology, ERA modelling, statistics and writing.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and earlier experience in ecotoxicology, ecology and ERA of contaminated sediment. We also expect you to have excellent communication skills.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for twelve months, with the possibility of extension with six more months. Start date 1 August 2022 or as per agreement.
