SCIENTIST TÜBINGEN
Developmental and Evolutionary Biology & Genetics Plant Research Structural and Cell Biology
Job Offer from June 08, 2022
The Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen is a world-renowned research institute and part of the German Max Planck Society.
The Department of Algal Development and Evolution is seeking a Biochemist for a Postdoc position (m/f/d) on meiotic proteins in algae.
The successful candidate for this position would take over an ambitious project where we aim to identify and characterise proteins involved in meiosis in the brown algal model Ectocarpus. The project is a collaboration between the Coelho Group and the Weir Group.
Responsibilities
- Conduct original research in functional biochemistry and develop experimental strategies to address research questions on the project, independently, and in collaboration with other researchers. Experiments include Pull-down assay and Immuno-precipitation (IP) using algae proteins/ extracts, Chip-Seq, Protein- protein interactions using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), isothermal calorimetry (ITC), fluorescence anisotropy and pulldowns, Structural biology (X-ray, Cryo-EM, NMR and AlphaFold2), Y2H library screening, CRISPR-Cas9 strategies and phenotype validation.
- Communicate research findings via reports, and presentations at meetings involving the Coelho group, the Weir Group and collaborators, towards the scientific aims and objectives of the teams and the project as a whole.
- Represent the research groups and present research findings at local and international meetings/seminars/conferences.
- Write research articles for publication in international, peer-reviewed journals.
- Supervise research assistants, students and/or other members of the team as appropriate: agree clear task objectives, organise and delegate work, and provide training on specialist laboratory methodologies or procedures.
- Contribute to writing grant applications to raise research funds.
You must have a strong background in biochemistry, with in depth experience in
- Recombinant protein expression in bacteria/ insect/mammalian cells and purification,
- Experience with the ÄKTA system (Affinity/ Ion exchange/ SEC)
- Extensive experience with molecular biology e.g. cloning
- Extensive experience with protein extraction, SDS-PAGE and Western Blot
- Analysis of protein interactions (e.g. Y2H, SPR , ITC , MST).
Your experience / background
- A PhD in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology or equivalent
- A strong track record in scientific research demonstrated by a first-author publication or pre-print
- Initiative to explore potential additional funding sources (e.g. EMBO, Marie-Curie, DFG)
- Strong organizational skills and good command of the English language (written and oral); German is not necessary neither previous experience on algae
The payment level is based on the German state public service salary scale (TVöD-Bund) according to the training, qualifications and professional experience. The benefits correspond to the regulations of the public service.
