Description of the subject area
The Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC) are fundamental for the interface to academic medicine and health care. History demonstrates that breakthrough research is often hard to predict. However, a strong interface between academia and healthcare is essential and enables new better and more efficient treatment for patients.
The research at the Division for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care covers front-line programs on patient safety, sepsis and infection, risk prediction and prevention in the perioperative period and metabolism and nutrition in the ICU and perioperative period. Research questions are mechanistic, explorative, and addressing clinical effectiveness/efficacy. The latter are investigated in both randomized controlled clinical trials or relevant patient registers and databases.
The academic activities are based on a well-established infrastructure with seminaries and a clinical research unit connected to an advanced experimental laboratory unit. The clinical research unit is staffed with two experienced research nurses that supports and coordinates planned and ongoing clinical studies including large RCTs. The laboratory provides a broad range of analytical technologies from PCR to mass spectrometry and has in addition well established collaboration with several other research laboratories at Karolinska Institutet and internationally. Within PMI there is also a shared unit for outcomes and epidemiology research. In addition, experimental and clinical research units are established at the corresponding clinical and academic organization at PMI Solna.
