The Unit of Occupational Medicine conduct research within the field of work environment and health (https://ki.se/en/imm/occupational-health). The aim of our research is to identify and prevent chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial health hazards in the work environment. Our main activities include research, education and dissemination of information. The research groups at the unit are multi-professional and include epidemiologists, statisticians, physicians, psychologists, sociologists, physiotherapists, civil engineers, public health specialists and others. The unit takes part in education of medical students, occupational health nurses and physicians, and specialists in occupational and environmental medicine.
We are looking for a collaborator who wants to work in an international research programme about theoretical development in life-course epidemiology with focus on mental health development during life. You will be stationed in a clinical research group active at the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (CAMM) at Stockholm Region, but be employed in the Occupational Medicine unit at The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) Karolinska Institutet. Both IMM and CAMM are located in and near the Karolinska Institutet Solna Campus. The position is fulltime during one year.
Description of the subject area
As a research specialist you will work in the following area:
Mental health in adolescence and the paths ahead. An ecological life course approach to mental health development into adulthood.
You will participate in a research program whose overall purpose is to analyse the importance of mental health in adolescence for well-being and health status into adult age. The proposed programme applies data from an outstanding 40-year prospective cohort study of school-leavers with uniquely high continuing participation rate.
The work is focused on developing an ecological life course framework of mental health by conceptual integration of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of human development and life course epidemiology and to apply this framework in our research. Policy relevant research questions will be in focus.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.
- A person is eligible to be appointed research specialist if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence,
- Has published high quality research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis.
- We are looking for a highly motivated person with a strong and documented interest in life-course epidemiology and theoretical development.
- You should have a PhD in Medical Science, Public Health, Epidemiology, Work Life Sciences, Sociology or similar. You should have a relevant background in Occupational and Environmental Medicine or public health, epidemiology and / or medicine. You can, for example, have a medical degree, a master’s degree in Public Health or in Occupational Safety and Health, Work Life Science with epidemiology focus or Biostatistics.
- Previous documented research in life-course epidemiology is a requirement.
- Documented competence in theoretical development is required.
- Documented experience in administration of research projects is required.
- Excellent skills in statistical software, such as SAS, R or STATA are required.
- It is also a requirement that the applicant can express him- or herself well in Swedish and in English both orally and in writing. Also, basic knowledge in Swedish is a merit.

We stress research expertise when assessing applicants with main focus on publication of high quality research in the field of the research programme (life-course epidemiology, mental health and theoretical development) after the doctoral thesis.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has documented experiences of advanced epidemiological methods in life-course studies of mental health.
