The capacity group European Studies is looking for a candidate to teach in the bachelor of European Studies, specifically teaching courses on European Union politics and policy across the various majors in the programme. The candidate has expertise in the politics and history of European integration and a firm knowledge of EU policy making. Your expertise testifies of a clear transnational perspective on EU politics and EU policies.

What are you going to do

You contribute to the teaching in the broad field of European Studies and specifically EU politics and policy, and develop new initiatives. You provide inspiring lectures and tutorials. Your teaching duties also include supervising theses and contributing to the teaching across the curriculum.

You will participate in the teaching of existing modules on European politics, such as European Integration, The Contemporary European Union, specialized courses on EU policy and policy making more generally, alongside more general courses. There may be an opportunity to teach courses that build on your own expertise in European politics and policy. Important is proven flexibility in teaching on topics beyond your own research focus, a willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams of teachers and the ability to offer lectures and tutorials in the bachelor and minor programmes that aspire to a wide range of students.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • teaching courses within the bachelor European Studies, in cooperation with the staff of the capacity group European Studies;
  • supervising bachelor and master theses;
  • keeping track of relevant scholarship and integrate new insights into teaching;

What do you have to offer

You are a dynamic and ambitious lecturer with a strong international teaching profile. You show that you have a broad knowledge of the Europe Union, European integration, and European policy, in particular from a transnational and/or international perspective. You are able to familiarize students with the methods that are relevant for studying European politics and policy making, and you have a strong affinity with transnational and interdisciplinary research and teaching across the social sciences and humanities.

You like to work and teach in an international environment. You are familiar with the challenges posed by teaching in an international and diverse classroom and are interested in further developing the skills that are needed to teach in such a challenging environment.

You are independent and able to cope with pressure, while you are at the same time collegial and are able to work together with others in team.

Your experience and profile

  • PhD in social sciences or humanities that is relevant to the position, with a specialization in EU politics and policy; candidates in the final stages of PhD completion will also be considered;
  • experience with teaching in Bachelor programmes at an academic level, especially in European Studies;
  • experience with digital and audiovisual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the capacity group European Studies;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • Good command of English; command of Dutch will be considered an advantage;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willing to acquire this.

International experience as well as the ability to teach in both English and Dutch are an advantage as is previous experience teaching in an international and/or interdisciplinary programme.

What can we offer you

We offer a four-year, 0.8 FTE contract (University Job Classification System profile “Docent 4”). The employment contract is for 30.4 hours a week, but you may opt for working fewer hours per week if desired. Preferred starting date is 1st of October.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between € €2.960 to €4.670. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
