The Department of Physics is an internationally lively research environment, situated in the AlbaNova University Center and has about 230 employees, 90 PhD students and 250 undergraduate students.

Project description
A postdoctoral opening is available for a skilled experimental physicist to work on research projects with merged beams of stored ions at the DESIREE storage-ring facility. DESIREE is since January 1, 2018, a national infrastructure with support from the Swedish Research Council (www.desiree-infrastructure.com). The DESIREE facility is fully operational and a number of experiments making use of the possibility to store ion beams for very long times in the cryogenic extremely high vacuum environment have been performed and have led to results published in Physical Review Letters and Nature Communications.

Recently, a number of experiments with two stored ion beams have been performed and several results of studies of the fundamental mutual-neutralization process have been obtained and published. A full list of publications from DESIREE.

A group of DESIREE-using researchers (lead by PI Prof. Henrik Cederquist) has been awarded a major project grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation for studies of mutual neutralization processes in DESIREE of relevance to astrophysics. One particular aspect of that to which the current position will be largely dedicated is the role of the mutual-neutralization process between atomic hydrogen anions and cations of metals taking place in stellar atmospheres and influencing the observed absorption features. Specific information on the Wallenberg project.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research with stored beams of atomic and molecular ions and the investigation of such beams by laser light and in collisions.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to skills and experience in experimental research with atoms and molecules in the gas phase. Experience with merged-beams experiments for studies of interactions among ions will be considered an important additional merit. We encourage you who are in an early stage of your carrier to apply. Your PhD (or equivalent degree) should have been obtained less than three years before the deadline of the application.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
