A Postdoctoral position in health economics is available in the Digital Medicine group (dMed) at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) funded by the interinstitutional PEARL project (jointly with the LCSB and the CHL) of the Fond National de la Recherche (FNR) Luxembourg. The digital Medicine group headed by the FNR-PEARL Chair Prof. Dr. med. Jochen Klucken focuses on shaping the digital transformation of medicine and innovating personalized digital medical devices and related digital supported healthcare solutions. The successful candidate will work in the Digital Medicine Group on the topic of health economic evaluation and analysis of innovative digital medicine devices (e.g. digital therapeutics and diagnostics) in close collaboration with the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) and the national regulatory authorities. The aim is to better understand a range of health economic aspects in this context, including methodological challenges to economic evaluation, value-for-money evidence, as well as issues around healthcare provider and patients acceptance and the overall social interaction with digital supported healthcare services.
Patient-centred digital healthcare services such as smartphone-based monitoring and management application can complement existing healthcare pathways and may develop into an entirely new type of a “digital” healthcare service provision. These digital healthcare applications have the potential to address patients’ needs, continuously monitor and manage individual patient journeys, and provide clinical decision support for the healthcare provider. “Real-world evidence” derived from patient-centered healthcare data becomes available delineating the health benefit. Digital therapeutics are at the verge of being reimbursed In Luxembourg but also European wide and integrated into healthcare procedures. The goal of the Digital Medicine group is to understand and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of this new type of healthcare application in medicine, taking a strong European comparative perspective.
A highly interdisciplinary team is being assembled within the dMed group to address the questions of medical benefit, structural and procedural changes, cost-effectiveness, as well as social acceptance of the resulting digital healthcare services. With the current position offer for a health economist, we are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a background and/or interest in evaluating innovative digital healthcare services in Luxembourg and other European healthcare systems.
The successful candidate would hence be expected to take initiative and be curious to contribute to and learn from a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, modellers, statisticians and economists in appraising and developing evidence on digital healthcare services. Jointly, we will help develop her/his profile and existing abilities to write academic publications and reports, and participate actively in international conferences for the dissemination of the results, apply for funding at national/international levels and co-/supervise bachelor and master and PhD students in your field.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Lead and conduct the cost-effectiveness evaluation of personalized healthcare technologies / digital medicine applications, both nationally and internationally
- Generate innovative, personalized quantitative evaluation models using real-world data and digital assessment tools
- Work with a multidisciplinary team of information specialists, researchers, modellers, clinicians and systematic reviewers in appraising evidence on the clinical and cost effectiveness of health technologies in integrated care models including wearable devices and APP-supported digital Healthcare Management.
- Support the application for funding at both the national and international levels
- (Co-)Supervise PhD students and mentor junior staff in the area of health economics and evidence synthesis.
- Participate in the training of LIH team members in health economics
- Building & establishing links with public and private researchers and developers in Luxembourg and internationally in the fields of Life Sciences and Health Economics
KEY SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD in health economics, economics, statistics or related field
- Interest and curiosity in connecting economic evaluation (cost-effectiveness) with regulatory processes and reimbursement procedures
- Excellent knowledge of a wide range of quantitative health economic methodologies, including economic evaluation, health econometrics, evidence synthesis and preference elicitation
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Ability to work independently
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications
- Experience in the writing of grant proposals
- Languages skills: fluent command of English, excellent English writing skills
Desirable
- Knowledge of (innovative) reimbursement strategies for digital medicine/telemedicine services / integrated care concepts in European healthcare systems
- Language skills: Any other commonly spoken language in Luxembourg such as French, Portuguese, German or Luxembourgish would be an added advantage
