The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (MPIIB) in Berlin is an institution of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, and is one of the leading research institutes in the field of immunology and infectious diseases. It features modern laboratories and is located in the heart of Berlin, just a short walk from the central train station.

For the research group “Malaria parasite biology”, led by Dr. Silvia Portugal, we are looking for a Technical Assistant (m/f/d) in full time.

The position is to support the development of novel genome sequencing approaches for malaria which will be used to track the spread of emerging antimalarial drug resistance. It is planned to deploy this approach to several labs around Sub-Saharan Africa. 

You will be part of an international and multidisciplinary team. Within the group you will work most closely with Dr. Jason Hendry.

Your area of responsibility

  • Collaboration in a highly dynamic research team investigating Plasmodium parasite biology in the seasonal malaria context and nanopore sequencing approaches
  • Development and optimisation of nanopore-based sequencing approaches for P. falciparum malaria
  • Contributing to technical aspects of ongoing research projects (DNA extraction, PCR and multiplex PCR, genome sequencing)
  • Ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment

What you bring with you

  • Completed training as a technical assistant or comparable qualification and relevant professional experience in the relevant scientific research techniques
  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and basic laboratory techniques
  • Comprehensive work experience in practical planning, execution, and documentation of experiments 
  • High sense of responsibility and organizational talent
  • Quick comprehension and open-mindedness for new challenges and techniques
  • You are a committed team player, you are communicative, supportive and you work neatly and conscientiously even under heavy workloads.
  • Good English skills are essential for smooth communication in an international environment
