The Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate with undergraduate teaching responsibilities in the areas of Analytic Philosophy or global traditions in Philosophy including Asian Philosophy.
We want to continue to tackle the issues faced by underrepresented groups in philosophy whether in staffing, curriculum, teaching, the public face of the disciplines, or in other ways. And so, you will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation, through your experience, work, ethos, identity, or in some other way.
We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. And so, we are welcoming, supportive, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values. We are, therefore, particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in Philosophy and other areas in the Arts, such as those of underrepresented genders (e.g., women, non-binary, trans) and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.
Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter – for this reason we advise applicants to begin the application process as early as possible, so that you are aware of what we require.
About the role:
Your role as Teaching Associate will be varied and challenging. You will convene modules at any undergraduate levels, as required. Depending on student enrolments there may also be some teaching responsibilities on other undergraduate modules (such as Reasoning, Argument, and Logic and Mind, Knowledge, and Ethics), dissertation modules, and MA modules.
As a Teaching Associate you will be expected to:
- Deliver innovative teaching and curriculum design.
- Contribute positively and proactively to the teaching culture, especially considering issues of underrepresentation.
- Supervise and examine dissertation students.
- Support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and learning skills.
- Take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students, dealing with sensitive issues.
- Be responsible for administrative duties.
This is a permanent, full-time (36.25 hours per week) post, commencing 1 September 2023. Arrangements for job share may be considered.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Harold Noonan, Head of Department, email: harold.noonan@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
