Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.
The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind with approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge. www.geo.uu.se

Duties
As the most rapidly warming region on Earth, the Arctic plays a pivotal role in shaping the global climate. Precise simulation of Arctic climate variations is crucial for accurate predictions of global climate change. However, the current climate models exhibit systematic biases in the Arctic, particularly in the marginal ice zone (MIZ). The MIZ is a critical area where the atmosphere, waves, ocean, and ice dynamically interact with one another. The intricate and insufficiently understood interactions among the Atmosphere, Waves, Ocean, and Ice (AWOI) in the MIZ pose significant challenges to enhancing existing climate and weather models. Therefore, the primary objective of this project is to shed new insights into the AWOI interactions in the Arctic using remote sensing data and numerical simulations. We will 1) use satellite images to explore the sea ice floe size and shape distribution, 2) explore the influence of sea ice floe on the turbulent flux and atmospheric mixing, and 3) develop turbulent parameterizations to take the influence of sea ice floes. By doing so, we strive to enhance our ability to predict polar oceanic extremes and the Arctic climate with greater accuracy.
Requirements

- hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in meteorology or similar, or
- have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
- have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
- The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills.
- The ideal candidate should demonstrate both strong independent work capabilities and excellent teamwork skills.
- Proficiency in written and oral English is a prerequisite, as the position involves working in an international setting.
- Being goal-oriented and well-organized are vital attributes for success in a doctoral program and will therefore be given significant emphasis.
