The Department of Art History at Uppsala University conducts teaching at First, Second and Third levels as well as research in Art History, Textile Studies and Conservation at two campuses, in Uppsala and Visby. As an academic discipline, Textile Studies encompasses the study of materials, tools and manufacturing techniques, users and producers. Knowing the craft and craftsmanship is essential for conducting studies or doing research in this field. It is a tool to help us understand, process and draw correct conclusions about textiles, both historical and contemporary, and their relationship with the world around them. In Textile Studies, we place textile objects in a wider context of for instance history, economy, craft traditions, education.
Duties
The position includes teaching, examination, research and administration. The position mainly entails teaching and supervision in Textile Studies, including current theories and methodology relevant for the field. The successful applicant will also be expected to teach textile crafts and how to analyse craft techniques. As part of the job, you will be coordinating courses and do some administrative work and other commonplace tasks at the department. Teaching is normally conducted in Swedish. Among your duties will be to represent the field of Textile Studies in work groups appointed by the Department management. Apart from teaching Textile Studies, you might be asked to do some teaching within the Department’s other subjects. The position also entails actively applying for external research funding and interacting with the local community.
Eligibility requirements
Candidates who have obtained a PhD or have the equivalent competence, and who have demonstrated pedagogical competence, and have the personal qualities required to fit the position well are eligible for the position of Senior Lecturer. Applicants must have a doctorate in Textile Studies or, if their doctorate is within another subject, be able to show that they have acquired both the required depth and breadth within the field of Textile Studies.
Candidates must have completed training in tertiary-level teaching of no less than ten weeks or obtained equivalent competence. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of employment. To qualify as a supervisor of doctoral students, the candidate’s pedagogical training must include postgraduate supervisor training.
The documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is required. If there are special circumstances, those who are unable to manage teaching and administrative duties in Swedish may be expected to obtain this ability within two years.
Apart from a doctoral degree in Textile Studies, or equivalent competence, the successful applicant will have the knowledge and skills concomitant with an education in or professional experience of textile crafts.
Assessment criteria for candidates who meet the eligibility requirements
In the selection of eligible applicants, weight will be assigned to research expertise, teaching expertise, and administrative and management expertise. The assessment of pedagogical competence will be accorded the same weight as the assessment of academic competence.
Academic competence
When assessing academic competence, primarily research quality will be taken into account. The scope of the research, mainly depth and breadth, will also be accorded significance. Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, as well as the ability to attract funding for research in competition with other researchers will be accorded significance. The documented ability to interact within the academic community as well as with the local community will be accorded significance.
Pedagogical competence
In the assessment of pedagogical competence, primarily pedagogical quality will be considered. Scope, breadth as well as depth, will also be accorded significance. Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching, as well as the ability to link research in the subject to teaching, subject-specific didactics and higher education pedagogy will be accorded significance. The ability to interact on higher education pedagogical issues with parties within and outside the university will also be considered pedagogical competence.
Other skills
Administrative competence and leadership skills are important to the position and will be accorded considerable significance.
Administrative competence may be demonstrated by, for instance, the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-adapted manner, as well as through the ability to establish and keep to a time plan. Competence includes overall planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects relevant priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner and based on an awareness of relevant goals and quality expectations.
Leadership skills and collaborative competence are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to achieve common goals effectively. The ability to coordinate a group as well as to generate commitment, participation and job satisfaction, and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrated competence.
The ability to plan, organize and carry out projects in collaboration with the local community is also considered collaborative competence. Popularised research, public debate and lectures are examples of collaborative interaction with the local community.
All qualifications must be documented in a way that makes it possible to assess their quality and scope.
