The Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health (IFNH) is composed by about 230 members including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scientific and technical/administrative staff. It is led by thirteen professors in laboratories covering key aspects of the entire food value chain, and involved in the teaching of two curricula: Food Science and Nutrition and Health Sciences and Technology.

Job description

The successful applicant will develop bioinformatics software for analysis and integration of microbiome and other omics datasets for studying microbial communities involved in foods and human health. She or he will be comfortable coordinating with a collaborative team of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers to develop and apply open-source software in a diverse range of research topics. 

The position is located at the Institute of Food, Nutrition, and Health at ETH Zurich within the Laboratory of Food Systems Biotechnology (Prof. Dr. Nicholas Bokulich). The Bokulich laboratory develops bioinformatics methods and software for microbiome research, including QIIME 2, and applies these tools to study microbiomes at the interfaces of foods and human health.

Profile

Key Qualifications

  • Masters- or doctorate-level degree in computer science, data science, electrical engineering, computational biology, microbiology, statistics, or other relevant fields
  • Proficient programming skills (Python) and software development/engineering experience
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork and organizational skills
  • English language proficiency (spoken, written) for communicating with colleagues and collaborators

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with bioinformatics method development / research software engineering
  • Experience with Git or other software version control systems
  • Strong record of open source software development
  • Knowledge of biological data structures and formats
  • Experience working with microbiome (marker gene, metagenome) or other omics data
  • Experience working with high-performance computing environments
  • Skilled in biological/statistical data analysis
