We are hiring an Assistant Professor of Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Public Sector!

We are a creative and ambitious team committed to team-based science and education in the field of digitalization, data and AI in public policy and governance. We work closely with other groups, are an active member of SAILS (the interdisciplinary AI network at Leiden University) and collaborate with the public sector practice.

Key responsibilities
In this position you will
- build and expand your own line of research on the intersection of policy, governance, data and AI;
- teach and develop courses in the institute’s bachelor and master programmes, specifically on digital technologies in the public sector;
- contribute to interdisciplinary projects and interfaculty initiatives on AI, for instance with colleagues from the Faculty of Law and the department of computer science (LIACS);
- participate in national and international academic research networks and publish in international scientific journals;
- contribute to the improvement and continuation of the education and research programs of the Institute;
- play an active role in linking scientific research and education to the practice of policy and management on your topic;
- supervise bachelor and master theses;
- contribute to the acquisition of research grants.
Requirements
Please apply if you
- hold a doctorate in public administration, political science, organizational sciences, sociology or another relevant field in the social sciences, with a research agenda that fits this position’s focus on data, AI and digitalisation in public administration and policy;
- have demonstratable affinity with and knowledge on public governance, specifically regarding digitalisation, data, and AI;
- have publications in national and international scientific journals or demonstrable potential to realise them;
- are enthusiastic about teaching, have experience with university teaching and are open to innovative and activating teaching methods;
- have experience or affinity with collaborating with societal partners within the public sector (local, national or international) and with developing and maintaining external networks;
- have a Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ, or BKO in Dutch) or would like to obtain this qualification within two years;
- have good verbal and written communication skills, in Dutch and English, or are willing to learn Dutch at a professional level within the foreseeable future;
- You are a team player and like to work with colleagues, who are partly employed at other institutes and faculties.
Our faculty and institute
The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs is one of the seven faculties of Leiden University. The faculty has an international profile, is developing strongly and consists of various institutes and centers such as the Institute of Public Administration, the Leiden University College, the Institute of Security and Global Affairs and the Center for Professional Learning at various locations in The Hague.
The Institute of Public Administration in The Hague is one of the largest and oldest institutions for scientific research and education in public administration in the Netherlands. It combines a strong international academic reputation with a central position among international, national, regional and local government institutions, including those in The Hague. The institute has received various national and international research grants including several VENI and VIDI grants from the Dutch National Science Organization, and grants for collaborative work from the EU (including ERC grants). In addition, the staff is also active in contract-research and teaching, which involves local and national government but also other public organizations from within Europe.
The Institute of Public Administration consistently receives high ratings in peer reviews for both its teaching and research programmes. The institute offers a Dutch-taught bachelor’s program with two tracks, a Dutch-taught master’s program in Management of the public sector, an English-taught master’s program in Public Administration and participates in various programs with other faculties, including the master’s programme Governance of Sustainability and master’s programs in digitization and Population Health Management.

Terms and conditions
The University Lecturer to be recruited is part of an ambitious and dynamic team of colleagues that wants to further expand the successes of recent years. There is a lot of collaboration across the boundaries of disciplines.
The appointment will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. You will be offered a temporary appointment for 18 months. Depending upon funding and performance, the position can be extended to a permanent position.
The salary varies, depending on qualifications and experience, from € 3,821,- to € 5,230,- gross per month based on full-time employment (scale 11 for Assistant professor).
