Subject description
A detailed model of clouds will be accelerated with artificial intelligence (AI) technology so as to acquire insights into climate change. The project will simulate how climate responds to CO2 emissions.  The project will assess how climate change will affect renewable energy sources in northern Europe in future.

Work duties
These tasks will be performed:

  • Emulate a cloud model with a deep learning neural network and implement it in a global model of climate;
  • Simulate the present-day climate with validation against observations;
  • Simulate future climate change;
  • Estimate impacts on renewable energy sources.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A proven fluency and experience in numerical modeling
  • Knowledge of mesoscale meteorology;
  • A doctoral (PhD) degree in meteorology, with a bachelor’s degree in physics or maths;
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English;
  • Programming language experience in UNIX environments, such as Fortran or C.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

It is an advantage if the applicant has documented knowledge in: – (1) mathematics, especially differential equations; (2) numerical methods and / or computer programming; and (3) physical meteorology (for example, cloud physics).

Familiarity with AI techniques and tools would be an advantage but is not essential.

In the application, applicants must provide proof of how they meet the above requirements. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence.
