PhD scholarship in Forest Sciences and Climate change


Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA), at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD–position in Forest Sciences – forest management under climate change induced natural disturbances.

The main objectives of the PhD-position will be to develop an overall framework for integrating risk and uncertainty of the natural disturbances in forest management decision-making under climate change. The supervision group will include expertise from Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) and NMBU.

Main tasks

The PhD student’s tasks will include:

  • Review occurrences and severity of natural disturbances (root rot, wind, bark beetles and fire) and their links to forest conditions under climate change
  • Modelling occurrence and severity of the occurrence on the timber production, timber quality and incomes
  • Integration of risk and uncertainty of natural disturbances in forest management decision making under climate change

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.

The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master’s degree level. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. Required Academic qualifications:

  • A relevant master’s degree in forest science, biology or similar
  • Documented quantitative skills

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

  • Documented experience in mathematical programming or statistical analysis
  • Forest or other biological modelling
  • Motivation for the outlined research project

You need to have:

  • Strong motivation and commitment
  • Analytical capacity with an overall grade B or better from your master’s degree
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration
  • Good knowledge of English – both oral and written

Remuneration and information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1017 PhD. Fellow. PhD. Fellows are normally placed in pay grade 54 (NOK 479.600,-) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment and follow ordinary meriting regulations.

Employment is conducted according to national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.
