The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics – Electronic Systems (ZEA-2) is a scientific engineering institute of Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH performing research and development projects in close cooperation with the institutes of the research center as well as external partners. The focus of our work are electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor and detector technology, signal and data processing as well as measurement techniques.

Project description:
Modern Cubesats are increasingly used for environmental observation, biological experiments or to test new space technology, whereby the miniaturization of electronics and sensor technology is an essential prerequisite for performing scientific experiments. Within the framework of cooperation our team develops miniaturized, modular measurement platforms for these small satellites. Our focus is on imaging sensors in combination with integrated System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions. In order to be able to use the latest technology and minimize costs, we largely use commercially available components (COTS) with additional mitigation techniques for stable use of the systems under the harsh conditions in space. Due to the radiation effects, artefacts appear in the acquired images, which must be separated from the actual measurement data using optimized image processing methods.

Your tasks:
The main focus of your work is the development of a suitable image processing method for automated segmentation of image artefacts in the recorded image sequences taking into account the limited processing power of satellite electronics. The method shall be verified with measurement data from a current Cubesat mission to quantify primarily radiation effects (particles) in space.

Your Profile:

  • Student of electrical engineering, computer science, physics or similar
  • Basic knowledge in programming and data processing (basic Python is desirable)
  • Interest in image processing methods
  • You work carefully, structured and independently

Our Offer:

  • Opportunity to work together in a team of highly motivated scientists and technicians
  • Experience in the analysis of scientific image data from satellite applications
  • Strong personal support during starting phase
  • Further development of your personal abilities in connection with a socially balanced work environment

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH aims to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcomes applications from women.

We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
