The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics – Electronic Systems (ZEA-2) is a scientific engineering institute of Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH performing research and development projects in close cooperation with the institutes of the research center as well as external partners. The focus of our work are electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor and detector technology, signal and data processing as well as measurement techniques.

Project description:
Modern Cubesats are increasingly used for environmental observation, biological experiments or to test new space technology. Therefore, the miniaturization of electronics and sensor technology is an essential prerequisite for performing best scientific possible experiments. Within the framework of cooperation our team develops miniaturized, modular measurement platforms for these small satellites. Our focus is on imaging sensors in combination with integrated System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions. In order to be able to use the latest technology and minimize costs, we largely use commercially available components (COTS) which requires additional mitigation techniques for stable use of the systems under the harsh conditions in space. In this context one research topic is the use of a CMOS sensor as particle detector model to predict the radiation effects in images.

Your tasks:
Your master thesis should lead to a more detailed simulation of artifact structures and their image values, which vary depending on the particle type and its energy. During your thesis an existing CCD-based simulation model will be adapted to the CMOS imager technology. You will work on implementing the CMOS-specific physical parameters and simulate the radiation environment with tools such as SPENVIS and GEANT-4. Finally, the adapted model will be evaluated using irradiation test data from a CMOS sensor and in-orbit data from an existing Cubesat mission.

Your Profile:

  • Electrical Engineering, computer science, physics student or similar
  • Basic knowledge in the programming language (basic Python is desirable)
  • Interest in semiconductor and particle physics
  • You work carefully, structured and independently

Our Offer:

  • Opportunity to work together in a team of highly motivated scientists and technicians
  • Experience in the simulation of space conditions on semiconductors
  • Strong personal support during starting phase
  • Further development of your personal abilities in connection with a socially balanced work environment
