PhD position is available in the laboratory of Associate Professor Barbara Guerra at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

A PhD position is available in the laboratory of Associate Professor Barbara Guerra at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark, starting from 1 September 2022, for a period of three years. Application deadline: 1 April 2022.

Obesity is a medical problem because it increases the risk of developing numerous chronic diseases. There is a great understanding of the basic molecular mechanisms activated when the body faces excessive storage of energy. This knowledge has led to the identification of therapies aiming to block the activity of enzymes regulating the synthesis of fat in the cells, to prevent and/or treat obesity-related conditions. These strategies are, however, not without drawbacks as they can promote undesired side-effects.

The PhD project will focus on the characterization of novel molecular mechanisms regulating de novo lipogenesis and adipocytes formation. Results derived from in vitro and in vivo investigations will pave the way for new treatment modalities for a successful management of obese patients.

Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Biomedicine at the time of enrolment in the PhD programme.

The successful candidate should have:

  • A significant experimental background in biochemistry and cell biology
  • Experience with animal models, molecular biology techniques and confocal microscopy
  • High intrinsic motivation and capacity for independent work
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in spoken and written English.

For more information, please contact Associate Professor Barbara Guerra, bag@bmb.sdu.dk.
