More about the position

The fellowship is devoted to carrying out a Ph.D. project within the project “EMPOWER: Sustainable Batteries in Mobility – (Em)powering a Net-zero Energy Transition”. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on this topic in an interdisciplinary team. The work encompasses engaging with various stakeholders (interviews and semi-structured group settings), and designing, running, analyzing and reporting large-scale surveys. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with junior and senior colleagues who focus on material science, energy systems-modelling, education, law and a planetary boundary perspective. A solid background in psychology plus an openness for learning about these other perspectives on the topic are therefore needed to successfully complete this PhD. The required output are three related papers to be published in relevant, high-quality international peer-reviewed journals. The three papers will tackle the topic from different angles, and the respective study designs will use different methodologies with a strong quantitative and multi-level focus.

The fellowship is for a period of 3 years. A 4th year can be considered with the addition of 25 % teaching requirement, depending on the competence of the applicant and the needs of the Department. The research fellow must take part in the Department’s approved Ph.D. program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period.

Qualification requirements

  • You hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in psychology, preferably with a major in social or environmental psychology. Only applicants with a grade point average of A, B or C on the ECTS scale in their Master’s degree will be qualified for admission to the Ph.D. program.
  • You have excellent statistical skills, preferably documented through thesis work, publications, and courses, and a strong motivation to learn new quantitative methods.
  • You have a strong interest in the topic and the various perspectives on it.
  • You are comfortable speaking with people and leading discussions.
  • You speak and write English fluently.
  • You speak Norwegian or a related Scandinavian language.

Preferable qualifications

  • You have excellent ideas how to theoretically and empirically examine knowledge, attitudes and behaviors relevant to the sustainability of batteries in mobility in Norway.
  • You are knowledgeable of relevant processes at the individual, group and societal levels.
  • You have experience in qualitative research or are willing to learn qualitative research methods.
  • You are experienced in analyzing data using R, Mplus, or SPSS, including multi-level modeling.
  • You have a teaching interest in social and environmental psychology

Personal skills

  • You are ambitious to conduct high-quality empirical research and resilient to cope with setbacks in the process.
  • You are a team player, who is interested in co-developing research ideas and in playing an active role in the team – yet you also know (and like to) work independently.
  • You are open to learn new statistical methods and to bridge the gap between disciplines in developing creative and thought-provoking ideas how to study opportunities and barriers to sustainability.
