At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time (100%) position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project ”Biomimetic Proteolipid Multilayers – Structure and Properties (BIOPROM)”, financed by the Research Council of Norway.

The project in the laboratory of Prof. Petri Kursula aims at the molecular characterization of the self-assembly process leading to the formation of myelin, which is a lipid membrane multilayer containing specific embedded proteins. The proteins are associated with lipid membranes and contain large degrees of disorder. We are interested in the structure and dynamics as well as the mechanisms of self-assembly and the physicochemical properties of myelin-like membranes.

The post-doctoral fellow will:

  • Participate in a multidisciplinary research project focusing on various aspects on the structure and dynamics of the myelin membrane, which is an assembly of lipid membranes and specific proteins
  • Participate in project planning and execution together with the team
  • Carry out research using methods of structural biology, biophysics, computational techniques and/or cellular model systems
  • Be active as part of the team, taking part in data collection in large facilities as well as supervision of younger colleagues
  • Carry out analysis, documentation, reporting, publication, and presentation of scientific data
  • Actively network and engage in setting up and carrying out international collaborations

The exact research tasks will be defined, once a suitable candidate has been found, as we aim to build a team with complementary expertise.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within structural biology, biophysics, protein science, or a complementary field, or have the doctoral thesis submitted prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded at the latest within 5 months after the deadline for applications.
  • Hands-on experience from challenging structural biology projects is a pre-requisite
  • Experience from international collaborations, scientific networking, and the use of large-scale research infrastructures is a strong asset
  • Documented experience from membrane protein research is a strong asset
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art techniques of structural biology and biophysics, including cryo-EM and/or crystallography, is a requirement
  • The ability to work both independently and as a responsible member of an international team is a requirement
  • Creativity, motivation, persistence, flexibility, and scientific ambition will be highly valued
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement
  • Personal qualities will be given weight in the selection

As the project is a multidisciplinary endeavour, a combination of different scientific backgrounds will be built for the research team. Hence, earlier scientific background can be from different fields related to structural biology and biophysics.
