Achieving a greenhouse gas-neutral energy supply is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-Economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), we use integrated models to explore how possible cost-effective transformation strategies must be designed to achieve this. Your Job:

Support us in providing orientation knowledge for politics, industry and society for the success of the energy transition by contributing to the further development of our energy system models.

Your main task will be the integration of CO2 process chains into our global energy system model based on the FINE model framework (https://github.com/FZJ-IEK3-VSA/FINE). A particular focus will be on the use in power-to-liquid products as well as possible CO2 sources in a greenhouse gas neutral energy system.

In addition, we expect you to:

  • contribute to the further development of the FINE model framework
  • consider transport options for power-to-liquid products and CO2 in an integrated way
  • develop possible demand projections for power-to-liquid products and CO2
  • optimize the allocation of global production locations of power-to-liquid products and CO2
  • supervise students
  • present your research findings to the best of your ability at conferences and in professional journals

Your Profile:

  • Excellent Master`s degree in natural sciences or engineering or a comparable course of study
  • Very good knowledge of energy process engineering
  • Knowledge of energy system modeling and energy economics is an advantage
  • Programming skills, ideally in Python
  • Fluent written and spoken English; German language skills advantageous
  • Distinct ability to work in a team as well as the ability to work cooperatively
  • Independent and analytical way of working

The position is initially for a fixed term of 3 years.
