An open Ph.D. Fellow position in health psychology* is announced at the Section for Health, Developmental and Personality Psychology (HUP). The HUP Section covers basic and applied research and teaching for the Bachelor, Master, Professional and PhD programs in health, developmental and personality psychology. The HUP Section is divided into three Units: Health Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Personality Psychology and has a joint venture with the Promenta Research Centre. The HUP Section has currently around 70 national and international permanent and non-permanent staff (circa 60% women, more than 20 different mother tongues). The Health Psychology Unit includes half a dozen of permanent Associate and Full Professors, several Ph.D. and Post-Doc fellows and Adjunct Associate Professors.

* Health psychology might be defined as the examination of how biological, social, and psychological factors influence health and illness.

More about the position

The main goal of the position is research training leading to the successful completion of a Ph.D. degree in Psychology. For more information, see the following website. The position will offer opportunities to develop high-quality research competence within the field of health psychology.

The applicants are expected to conduct a Ph.D. research project within the field of health psychology which will be supervised by one of the faculty members of the Health Psychology Unit. Applicants should contact at least one the faculty members of the Health Psychology Unit to explore specific research collaborations before submitting their application.

The Ph.D. fellow must take part in the Ph.D. program approved by the Department of Psychology and is expected to complete the Ph.D. research project during the period of employment.

The appointment is a fulltime Ph.D. position for a period of three or four years depending on the teaching competence and experience of the successful applicant and the teaching and administrative needs of the HUP Section. For a four-year appointment, teaching and administrative duties make up to 25% of the position (lecture, seminar, supervision, exams, administration for the Section, etc.).

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian Cand.psychol. / Master in Psychology, or a related field. The degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS
  • Average grade on the master’s degree that are A or B. Candidates with an average grade C on the master’s degree can be assessed individually upon application
  • Applicants must provide a maximum 5-page / 2 000-word research project in health psychology (see the “How to apply” section for guidelines).
  • Applicants must provide a main authorship declaration stating that they are the main author of their research project (see the “How to apply” section for guidelines).
  • Applicants must have fluent oral and written communication skills in English (similar to e.g. CEFR Proficient user Level C or equivalent).
  • Applicants must have the relevant personal qualities for the position: (i) to be highly motivated, (ii) to be able to work both independently and to cooperate with others, (iii) to be reflective, critical, and creative.

Desired additional qualifications (not necessary but would be an advantage)

  • A master thesis in health psychology or equivalent.
  • Research competence and experience in health psychology.
  • Teaching competence and experience.

In addition to the educational background, the main authorship of the research project, and the support from the prospective main Ph.D. supervisor at Unite of Health Psychology, emphasis will be placed on the following criteria in the succeeding order of importance (i.e. I to III) to evaluate the qualifications of the applicants:

       I.              Quality of the Research project

       II.             English proficiency, and Personal qualities

       III.            Research record, and Teaching record

Academic achievements will be weighed against career stage and adjusted for parental and sick leaves, and professional breaks. Personal suitability for the position will also be given great emphasis in the evaluation. Interviews with the best qualified applicants will be arranged.

  • A research project of max 5 pages / 2000 words all included. The research project should contain the following sections: Background (including scientific originality and interest, social and clinical implications), research questions/hypotheses, approach/methodology/analyses, timeline, feasibility/risk factors, ethical considerations, dissemination plan, open science consideration, and list of references. The name of the prospective faculty member of the Health Psychology Unit who could act as main supervisor should also be included at the end of the research project. The 5-page / 2000-word limit (all included) is adamant.
  • A signed and dated of main authorship declaration stating that they are the main author of their research project in line with the recommendations from the “Vancouver Declaration” (https://www.forskningsetikk.no/en/resources/the-research-ethics-library/legal-statutes-and-guidelines/the-vancouver-recommendations/). This main authorship declaration must be signed and dated by the applicant and any other co-author(s) of the research project.
  • A CV summarizing personal information, educations, positions, research records, teaching records, and any other qualifying information.
  • A complete list of scientific publications and communications (including knowledge dissemination).
  • Copies of educational certificates in English or in one of the Scandinavian languages (academic transcripts only).
  • A list of three references (name, relation to candidate (teacher, supervisor, employer, etc.), e-mail and phone number). No letter of reference should be included in the application.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
