Applicants are invited for a two-year and two and a half months position as Postdoctoral Fellow in the project “Speaking up for the quiet ones: Voicing the perspectives of shy students in middle schools”. The position is based at the Department of Special Needs Education, the University of Oslo.
The Department of Special Needs Education is one of three departments at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University in Oslo which also has a permanent center.. The department focuses on basic and applied research and education of bachelor-, master- and doctoral level candidates within the field of special needs education in Norway.
The project “Speaking up for the quiet ones” is a study in three phases exploring shy students’ experiences and their teachers’ use of strategies. The announced position will concentrate on phase two in the project.
The goal of phase two is to conduct a large-scale quantitative study to evaluate a complex theoretical model linking shyness among early adolescents to aspects of school adjustment. This model will denote a series of potential constructs and mechanisms that link shyness with school adjustment, including both mediated and moderated pathways.
Students will complete a series of self-report measures, all chosen for their strong psychometric properties, evidence of reliability and validity, and appropriateness for use at this age period. Measures of constructs that emerge from phase one will also be included. Validation of the model will contribute significantly to the literature on shyness during adolescence and the impact of shyness on school adjustment and attainment. It will demonstrate the role of mediating and moderating factors in school adjustment to teachers and other education professionals, showing that these factors do impact this age-group.
As a part of the project, the Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in the research group Behavioral Emotional and Social Difficulties.

More about the position
The appointment is a full-time position and is made for a period of two years and two and a half months. The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.
It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.
Qualification requirements
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in educational sciences, psychology, sociology, or other relevant fields. The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date of application. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved
- Advanced quantitative skills in either psychometrics, econometrics, epidemiology, or longitudinal modeling, and eagerness to develop such skills further. Programming skills and/or experience in method development is an asset but not a requirement
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language
- A publication record in high quality journal
