1 permanent position is available at the Department of Health Management and Health EconomicsInstitute of Health and Society for an Associate Professor in the subject area of economic evaluation.

Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of interconnectedness of sickness, health and the health systems. Policy, culture, the environment, the society as well as biology interact. This complexity characterizes the research, teaching and service at the institute. Tenure is linked to the Institute, but the current position(s) will be allocated to the Department of Health Management and Health Economics (HELED).

HELED is a multidisciplinary department, consisting mostly of economists, social scientists and medical doctors, and conducting research in the fields of health economics, health management and health policy, and public health. HELED is organized in four research groups (see website).

The department is responsible for PhD training, the teaching of medical students in quality, leadership and knowledge management, and four discrete study programs: a bachelor’s degree program in Health Management and Health Economics (taught in Norwegian), two master’s degree programs; Health Management, Policy and Health Economics and the European Master in Health Economics and Management (both taught in English), and an executive master’s degree program in Health Administration (taught in Norwegian).

The appointee must be able to lead and initiate research, supervise doctoral degree students, participate in teaching and examination work at all levels, and undertake administrative tasks, in accordance with applicable provisions. Knowledge and publication history with mathematical simulation model, cost-effectiveness analysis, and statistical methods applied in economic evaluation will be valued. The teaching responsibilities for this position are associated with the department’s bachelor and master courses in economic evaluation. The person appointed will be placed in the economic evaluation research group (Economic evaluation of health technologies – Institute of Health and Society). Knowledge of the Norwegian health care sector is desirable. 

Teaching-related work accounts for 45% of the position, while 10% is calculated for administrative tasks.

Qualification requirements

  • A PhD with a specialization in economic evaluation or related field.
  • Educational competence will count positively. Applicants who do not have documented basic university pedagogical competence must acquire this within two years from appointment.
  • Documentation of qualifications in dissemination, management and administration will count positively. 
  • Teaching experience and/or supervision in economic evaluation will count positively
  • Knowledge of the Norwegian health care sector is desirable.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish are a prerequisite for performing all the tasks associated with the position. Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment are given a deadline of two years to learn Norwegian. 

Personal skills

  • High ambitions and quality of teaching, research and communications is expected.
  • High quality of research, and publishing in peer-reviewed international journals is expected.
  • Within 6 months after appointment the successful candidate must provide a 3 year plan for future research in line with the institute’s/department’s strategic priorities. The plan is to be presented for the head of department.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create an attractive research environment will be emphasised. Active collaboration, also interdisciplinary and internationally is expected.

  • Educational portfolio of 3-6 pages documenting educational competence and experience, including a reflection note in which your own practice and learning vision is anchored in the SoTL criteria (focus on student learning, development over time, a research approach and a collegial attitude and practice)
  • PhD diploma
  • Academic works (up to 10 publications) and a brief account of these
  • List of 3 references with name, title, relation to candidate, email and phone number
