A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) is available at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, University of Oslo.
The Department of literature, area studies and European languages (ILOS) aims at strengthening its portfolio on Ukraine. We therefore seek a scholar who specializes on topics related to literature, language or area studies focusing on Ukraine or Ukrainian. The successful candidate must develop a project that is anchored within the above-mentioned fields of research. Comparative and interdisciplinary work is welcome, but it is required that Ukraine/Ukrainian be the major focal point of the project.
The University of Oslo does not currently have a permanent position linked to Ukraine but offers classes on Ukrainian language, literature, and history/politics. It is expected that the successful candidate should work with the section for East European and Slavic studies in order to develop the curriculum. We seek a candidate who is passionate about teaching as well as research.
In order to apply for the position, the candidate must present a project description and explain how their profile fits into the main profile of the department. Only projects that thematically are linked to the department’s portfolio (language/literature/area studies) will be taken into consideration. It is required that the applicant as a minimum can read Ukrainian.
Research projects pertaining to modern or contemporary aspects of Ukrainian civilization, literature, or language may be given priority.

More about the position
The position is available for a period of 4 years. There is a 25 % component of the position which is devoted to teaching and administrative duties. These duties include obtaining basic teaching qualifications.
The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment of the department and contribute to its development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.
Qualification requirements
- PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in Ukrainian literature, language or area studies (history/politics/civilization)
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
- Good working knowledge of Ukrainian, reading skills at a minimum
- Interest in teaching and outreach
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
- The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the approval of the doctoral thesis.

- The research project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
- The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame.
- Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines
