At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University, Aalborg Campus, one or more PhD Stipends in Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Management are available for a period of three years. The positions are open for appointment from 1 September 2022 or soon hereafter. Department of Materials and Production (MP) has a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Of them, exoskeleton is one of the strategic research areas that benefit the industry and society through interdisciplinary co-operations and the state-of-the-art technologies.  Thereby, as an employee at the Department you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations The positions are in the research group Center for Industrial Production (CIP). CIP is an interdisciplinary research group at the intersection of operations & supply chain management, innovation management, and organizational design, with strong links to industrial partners in manufacturing, and research partners in production and material technologies.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The positions are available in the area of green transformation of manufacturing, in particular concerning the complexities arising from a circular economy and the use of recycled materials. As part of the research group, the candidate will be involved in ongoing research projects related to increasing the sustainable use of materials in manufacturing (on a strategic or operational level).

The responsibilities of the PhD student will include:

  • Developing methodologies and tools to transform advanced production systems into proactive capabilities related to circular economy.
  • Publishing in high ranked peer-reviewed journals and conferences as well as engaging in other forms and levels of research dissemination
  • Collaborating with colleagues on joined research projects,
  • Communicating the findings to the public in general and to industrial stakeholders in particular.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have excellent academic qualifications. Good analytical and technical skills, especially knowledge of and interest in industrial issues are essential. Our ideal candidate comes with a strong interest in sustainability, in-depth experience with the manufacturing industry, and research experience related to complex engineering and/or organizational systems.  Experience in research within one, or preferably more, of the following topics will be prioritized:

  • Sustainable supply chain design, analytics and decision-making
  • Organizational and production design for circular economy
  • Production systems design
  • Organizational behaviour and organizational design
  • Systems Engineering
  • IT architecture and digitalization of decision-making

 Other helpful qualifications

  • Experience in working closely with industrial partners – ideally experience working in manufacturing industries or with a strong network in the manufacturing industry
  • Danish language skills are an advantage to facilitate collaboration with industry
  • Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary research teams

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
