The position is with theAutonomous Robots Labof NTNU and focuses on fundamental and applied research in the domain of resilient robotic perception and spatial intelligence in fully or partially GPS/GNSS-denied and possibly visually-degraded environments. Topics of priority include – but are not limited to – research in a) Simultaneous Localization And Mapping in cluttered and obscurants-filled environments with challenging light conditions b) environment representations that can facilitate agile and safe motion and path planning for Micro Aerial Vehicles, as well as c) data-driven policy learning for safe navigation.
The Autonomous Robots Lab has leading research in robotic autonomy. Our track-record includes the recent win on the DARPA Subterranean Challenge (leading Team CERBERUS: video1, video2, video3, video4), top-tier publications, a host of prestigious grants funded by both US and European sources, and an international network of research collaborators.
The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.
Your immediate leader is Professor Kostas Alexis.
Duties of the position
- Research in the domain of the position – defining core research direction for the topic and providing solutions onboard robotic systems
- Collaboration with PhD students and other researchers in common projects
- Publish relevant papers in top-tier journals and conferences in the domain
- Support in leading international research projects involving multiple partners
- Co-supervision of master theses
- Possible involvement in research grant preparation
Required selection criteria
- You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Cybernetics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar. If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
- Track record of published works in the domain of the position including at least one journal publication
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.
Preferred selection criteria
- Strong track record of publications in top conferences and journals in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, or state estimation
- Extensive experience in C++ and Python
- Extensive experience with the Robot Operating System
- Experience in code open-sourcing
- Good written and oral English skills

Salary and conditions
As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 2 years.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The position is subject to external funding through a European project expected to start in Fall 2022.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
