Staff Engineer

At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a position as Staff Engineer – scientific programmer.

The position will be funded by several external projects the first years.

About the Department:

Digitalization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of the society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of the society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. We are also building up a group in computer science didactics. The department offers education for the future at Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels. The department is in rapid growth regarding its number of students, research directions, and employees. We have today about 900 students and 150 employees, among which 37 are faculty and 70 PhD candidates. We have established the Center for Data Science (CEDAS) as an important extension of our research and education activities.

About the work tasks:

The successful candidate will work at the Computational Biology Unit (CBU), an interdisciplinary center hosted by the Department of Informatics and dedicated to excellent research, teaching, and infrastructure in computational life sciences.

The programmer will be part of international research teams developing novel methods in the fields of molecular and mathematical modeling. The research teams work in the fields of, e.g., protein structure modeling, biomolecular simulations, and systems medicine.

The tasks will consist in developing, maintaining, and upgrading software solutions that implement novel computational methods. Interoperability with existing bioinformatics databases and tools has a strong focus. The successful candidate is expected to have a high willingness and ability to obtain a working knowledge of a variety of computational fields, including molecular dynamics and stochastic chemical kinetics.

Qualification and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree that includes extensive training in programming.
  • Applicants should have excellent programming skills in more than one programming language.
  • Applicants should have experience with Python and libraries for scientific computing.
  • Applicants should have experience with C/C++.
  • Experience with Typescript/Javascript is an advantage
  • Experience with development and deployment of web-based solutions is an advantage.
  • Experience with parallel programming is an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of dynamical systems is an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of molecular concepts is an advantage
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

  • Salary at pay grade 53-58 as Staff Engineer (code 1085) This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 483  700 – 524 900, -. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
