Project: THE – Tuscany Health Ecosystem (PNRR)

Commitment & contract: collaboration contract, 18 months

Location: Pisa, CNI@NEST – Pontedera CMI@SSSA

WHO WE ARE

At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarter is strictly inter-connected with our 11 centers around Italy and two outer-stations based in the US for a truly interdisciplinary experience.

YOUR TEAM

IIT is present in Tuscany since 2009 developing two Research Centers, in Pisa and in Pontedera, in strong synergy with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Scuola Normale Superiore.

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where physicists, chemists, surface scientists, materials scientist, biologist, biotechnologist, electrical and biomedical engineers collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research.

The “2D Materials Engineering” Research Line at CNI is coordinated by Dr. Camilla Coletti, Principal Investigator and Coordinator for the Graphene Flagship activities in IIT, who has extensive experience in 2D materials, surface science, chemical vapor deposition and photonics. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art tools for the synthesis and characterization of bidimensional (2D) materials, high-resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, and facilities for the implementation of sensing and microfluidic devices based on graphene.

The “Smart Bio-Interfaces” Research Line at CMI, coordinated by Prof. Gianni Ciofani, focuses on the development and exploitation of physically-active nanoparticles and nanostructured materials, able to provide appropriate instructive cues to cells and tissues; at the same time, particular attention is dedicated to complex in vitro models for the testing of the developed nanoplatforms. The Research Line is especially active in the modeling of the blood-brain barrier and the brain microenvironment.

The selected candidate will be expected to design, fabricate, and characterize microfluidic-sensorized devices acting as scaffolds for cell culturing and as platforms for the testing of drug delivery systems. The platform will be fabricated through advanced micro/nanofabrication techniques.

Both junior and experienced (up to 5 years of post-doctoral experience) candidates will be considered for the position.

 WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU SHINE

  • A PhD in Bioengineering, Nanotechnology, Physics, or related fields
  • Experience with micro/nanofabrication techniques are mandatory
  • Experience in sensor development and characterization is strongly recommended
  • Experience with two-photon polymerization/direct laser writing approaches is strongly recommended
  • Documented experience on 2D materials
  • A strong publication record (in relation to the academic age of the candidate)
  • High level of English, both spoken and written, is an essential requirement

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Experience in in vitro testing with simple cellular models represents a plus
  • Experience on synthesis of 2D materials represents a plus
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving attitude
  • High motivation to learn
  • Spirit of innovation and creativity
  • Good in time and priority management
  • Ability to work in a challenging and international environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary package for international standards
