Description:

The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management at Sinai Health System is seeking a candidate for Division Head, Obstetric Anesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital, part of Sinai Health System. The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The position is for a 5-year term, with possibility of renewal for a second 5-year term following a structured review process. The anticipated start date will be January 1, 2023, or one which is mutually agreed upon.

Mount Sinai Hospital is an acute care hospital and home to the largest high-risk obstetric centre in Canada. It has a busy Labour and Delivery Unit, with more than 7,000 deliveries annually. The Division of Obstetric Anesthesia is tasked with the provision of peripartum anesthetic care. In addition, the Division maintains an international Fellowship program and is highly engaged and world-renowned in obstetric anesthesia education and research. The Division is part of the joint Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management at Sinai Health System, University Health Network, and Women’s College Hospital. The Department participates in provision of anesthesia and pain management for general surgery, gynecology, otolaryngology, urology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dentistry, orthopedics, and ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital. All surgical programs have significant oncology components. The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management is a growing department with a strong focus on clinical care, research, and education.  Areas of focus at Sinai Health System include maternal and fetal health, surgical oncology, inflammatory bowel diseases, pain medicine, quality improvement in surgical services, and research in education. 

The successful candidate must have a clear and achievable vision for advancement of the Division as a global leader in obstetric anesthesia research and education. The candidate will be an established clinician-scientist leading a high-impact research program supported by national and international peer-reviewed funding. The candidate will be expected to further research and education surrounding all aspects of obstetric anesthesia and serve as a mentor to new investigators. The candidate will receive protected time for research and scholarly activities.

Requirements for the position include a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in anesthesia (or equivalent), eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and proficiency in English. The candidate will provide clinical anesthesia care throughout the surgical programs at Mount Sinai Hospital with a specialized focus in maternal and fetal health. The successful candidate must have proven clinical skills at a high level and a commitment to teaching students, residents, and fellows. Compensation will be through a shared practice plan and will be based in part on fee-for-service billings and commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an anesthesiologist in the Province of Ontario.
