Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The position reports to the Principal Investigator. For day-to-day responsibilities, the position will engage with CCNA Team 18 investigators.

The individual will work closely with project investigators and researchers from across Canada. The position exercises a degree of autonomy in research activities but requires the individual to have strong communication and teamwork skills. Because of the complex multi-staged nature of projects, the individual requires strong organizational and time management skills and strategies gained from previous research experience. This position is responsible for contributing to the piloting, analysis and validation of the Canadian Indigenous Cognitive Assessment-urban (CICA-u), and to the development, facilitation and dissemination of project reports and knowledge sharing.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develops and implements research plans and procedures (in which overall goals are set by the PI and investigator teams)
  • Achieves background research such as searches, critical appraisal and summary of literature
  • Provides input to the investigators on research methods, interpretation of results and potential directions within incumbent’s field of expertise
  • Observes and records results
  • Organizes data, prepares data for analysis and carries out analysis procedures under the direction of the investigator team, using computer programs
  • Prepares and refines results for presentation and publication (i.e., peer-reviewed articles, conference presentations, reports, etc.) in collaboration with the broader research teams
  • Work with a high-level concentration, resourcefulness, and creativity, in performing highly complex and analytical functions
  • Incorporate resourceful, innovative, and creative problem solving approaches
  • Work independently and with broad strategic guidance with minimal hands-on direction
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community.
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate reporting to supervisor to keep them informed of activities, and progress of work.
  • Keep office and work area clean and safe.
  • Respectfully and effectively provides outreach and engagement to community and stakeholders within community settings as well as those who are part of each project, with regard for diverse governance structures.
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis, interpretation and synthesis for use in project outputs including scholarly publications

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or higher, with critical research training, within the following disciplines: health-related social sciences, health systems, public health, population health, or humanities. Professional health degree (i.e. nursing ) with experience in research is an asset for this position
  • Minimum 3 years of research experience in any of the research discipline domains described above. A background in health service, community and patient engagement and service user involvement
  • Experience doing interviews or focus groups in a health research environment
  • Experience with literature reviews and/or searching library databases for literature; A collaborative approach to research and partnership-building
  • Experience and knowledge of university research ethics procedures; ability for professional research writing
  • Congruent training and/or Indigenous community experience facilitating critical knowledge and understanding of Indigenous realities impacting health and strong inter-cultural communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint); Internet skills
  • Experience with qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVivo)
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and  service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Ability to work independently and multitask with excellent attention to detail
