Course description:
This course is for students who have no background knowledge in Urdu. The course provides students with basic information about the Urdu language, paying particular attention to literacy skills, i.e., reading and writing in Urdu. Students start by learning how to write and pronounce the alphabet and how to connect letters to form new words. Then, they learn basic vocabulary in Urdu in order to express basic ideas orally and in writing. By the end of the course, students should be able to write simple sentences to express basic information, and they should be able to conduct basic conversations in Urdu.

Class schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays 5pm-7pm (NOTE: All courses at UofT Mississauga are expected to be delivered in-person in Fall/Winter 2022-23. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the University.)
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023
Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I – $16,979.34 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $17,738.50 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)
Sessional Lecturer II – $18,171.16 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)
Sessional Lecturer III – $18,603.80 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum qualifications: Applicants must have a completed a graduate level degree in the relevant area of the course. Demonstrated experience teaching university-level language courses is required. Native, or near-native, Urdu language fluency is required.
Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Preference will be given those with experience teaching a similar language course. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.
Description of duties:
Preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration, and marking of assignments, tests, and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours and maintaining other forms of contact with students; supervising TAs assigned to the course (if any); attending course administrative meetings as required.
