We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campus is located in Espoo, Finland.

Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering (CHEM), Department of Chemistry and Materials Science (CMAT), is now looking for a

Staff Scientist for electrochemical energy conversion and storage

Are you passionate about electrochemistry and looking for a possibility to have an impact on the development of electrochemical energy storage and conversion?

We are looking for a staff scientist with a solid theoretical and experimental background in electrochemistry with the competence and interest to develop electrochemical characterization methods, including integration of in-situ characterization methods to electrochemical measurements. The focus is on energy conversion reactions. The development of the infrastructure including occupational safety is required in the position.

Your role and goals

Your role would be to maintain the electrochemistry infrastructure, organize service of the equipment, train the users, and support our researchers in analyzing data. In addition, you would participate in funding proposals and research as well as in increasing the knowledge of the available methods within the school.

You are also expected to actively develop the techniques through academic research and actively collaborate with researchers at CHEM and with internationally renowned electrochemistry experts. Users often need support that goes beyond the basic training of the use of the equipment. Hence, you are expected to also assist in the planning of the in-situ experiments and interpretation of the results. An important task is also to strengthen the relationship with industrial partners and establish research collaboration with companies.

The scientific environment

CMAT Department has 11 professors and ca. 100 staff. Its research and education is based on expertise in chemistry (organic, inorganic physical, analytical), and in the science of functional materials, nanomaterials, surfaces and thin films. The approach ranges from atoms to functionality of systems. The activities may be grouped into four main areas: 1. Electrochemical energy storage and conversion; 2. Soft functional materials; 3. Inorganic functional materials; 4. Molecular modelling.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for applicants who have

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, chemical engineering or related field
  • Relevant experience in electrochemical measurements and research after PhD
  • Good written, oral, and communication skills, ability to communicate with scientific peers and the public, which requires fluent command of English
  • International experience and connections to the European electrochemistry community; experience in collaboration with industrial partners is beneficial
  • Good record of publications in peer-reviewed journals (both as co-author or first/corresponding author)
  • Experience in university level teaching is seen as a merit.
