Department of Plant Breeding

The Department of Plant Breeding at the Faculty for Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science (LTV) at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is looking for a bioinformatician who will handle research projects linked to several world-leading research groups at SLU Alnarp. The current position is part of an SLU effort, SLUBI https://www.slubi.se/, with several centrally coordinated bioinformatics positions. The person will be working with researchers in various subject areas at the LTV faculty.

The LTV Faculty has the main part of its activities at SLU Campus Alnarp, and is responsible for research, education, environmental analysis and external cooperation in the fields of landscape and horticulture. The faculty is also active in the areas of agriculture, food production, health, quality of life, environment and water. The faculty has six departments and several centers and other entities. SLU Campus Alnarp is located in Sweden’s most dynamic agricultural, horticultural and food region. It is a few steps from the sea and near the student cities of Lund and Malmö and metropolitan life in Copenhagen. The Öresund region is in an expansionary phase where knowledge, education and research have a central meaning.

Duties:

The bioinformatician will be attached to the centrally coordinated bioinformatics support within SLU, SLUBI, and placed at SLU Campus Alnarp to interact with plant researchers and other bioinformaticians at SLU Campus Alnarp. The person will work in close collaboration with other computational and experimental scientists to design experiments, provide bioinformatics and computational help, as well as teaching, training and advice to SLU’s researchers and students.

Example of work tasks include to develop bioinformatic tools to analyze data from genomics experiments, and perform bioinformatics analyses, development and maintenance of bioinformatics pipelines and infrastructure on local data servers and on the national UppMax cluster, and perform different omics analysis on the data of plants, microbes and microbiomes.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an educational background in the fields of computational biology, molecular biology, genetics, statistics, computer and/or data sciences. A master’s degree (or higher) or equivalent in related subjects together with relevant previous work experience in a bioinformatics research group is desirable.

The applicant should have experience with some of the following subject areas:

  • Experience working with high throughput data, including NGS data.
  • Strong programming skills and in-depth experience with several programming languages, such as Python, R, Perl, or C++.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux environments, including shell scripting and High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster usage (local data servers, UppMax or similar).
  • Experience in applying rigorous analysis methods to large-scale biological data, such as next-generation sequencing data.
  • proteomics and metabolomics.

It is desirable that the applicant speaks one of the Scandinavian languages, but the working language is English and the person receiving the position is expected to be fluent in English in speech and writing. It is important that the candidate has ability to work independently as well has good skills in communication and collaboration as the work will be carried out in collaboration with many researchers and students. We will attach great importance to personal suitability.
