The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 230 people, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university, but it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. The city of Jena has an active student scene and a diverse cultural life. We are looking for a Chemical-technical assistant (m/f/d) in full-time, limited for 2 years.

Background and position description:

The MPI-BGC operates the Central Analytical Laboratory of the European research infrastructure Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) – an observation network for greenhouse gases. The ICOS laboratory in Jena performs high-precision analyses of air samples taken at measuring stations throughout Europe. The measurement data thus generated contributes to the understanding of greenhouse gas balances. As part of a team of 12 people, you will support this exciting task. You will help ensure undisturbed routine operations and contribute to the following activities:

Your tasks:

  • Execution of precision measurements with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry on air samples
  • Registration of air samples and their metadata in a database
  • Contact with European partners for coordination of sample transport
  • checking the integrity and conditioning of glass containers for sample collection
  • Organisation of international laboratory comparison measurements
  • Surveillance of the measurement operation and ensuring media supply (gases, liquid nitrogen)

Your profile:

  • interest in our work
  • independent, careful and reliable way of working
  • strong team and communication skills
  • experience in quantitative instrumental-analytical measurement methods is advantageous
  • good manual skills
  • knowledge of computer applications (database, instrument control, MS Office)
  • good written and spoken German and English language skills
  • training as chemical-technical assistant or comparable qualification

Our offer:

We offer an exciting working environment in a small team and a modern equipped laboratory. The work location is close to the city center and train station and is very easy to reach by public transport. The position is filled on a temporary basis within the context of a parental leave replacement. Part-time work is generally possible. The position will be evaluated and graded following the collective agreement according to TVöD Bund; in addition, we will provide a pension plan based on the public service (VBL).
