The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary basic research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 230 people, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university. But it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. The city of Jena has an active student scene and a diverse cultural life. We are looking for the following person as soon as possible a Head of ICOS Calibration Laboratory (m/f/d) in full-time, part-time possible, initially limited for 2 years.
Background and position description:
The MPI-BGC operates the Central Calibration Laboratory of the European research infrastructure Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS), an observation network for greenhouse gases. Among other things, this laboratory produces the reference gases for atmospheric measurements at ICOS observatories and thus provides the basis for the required accuracy of these measurements within Europe. The data generated contributes to the understanding of greenhouse gas balances. We are looking for a Laboratory Manager with an inclusive, appreciative and goal-oriented leadership style. We offer an exciting working environment in a small team of 12 people and a modern equipped laboratory. The place of work is close to the centre and the train station and is very easy to reach by public transport. The position can be extended beyond the fixed-term period
Your tasks:
- Management of the ICOS calibration laboratory for reference gas production and calibration
- Carrying out calibration measurements and quality control of the measurement results
- Experimental further development of analytical methods as well as implementation of new methods and research tasks within the framework of third-party funded projects
- Writing scientific publications and reports
- Initiation and maintenance of international scientific cooperations
- Cooperation with international research partners on tasks of the central ICOS laboratory
- Operation, maintenance and repair of measuring systems
Your profile:
- Successfully completed scientific university studies in the fields of environmental engineering, technical physics, chemistry or comparable qualifications
- Demonstrable experience in quantitative analysis and good knowledge of precise trace gas analysis
- Demonstrable experience in the operation and maintenance of high quality measuring equipment; experience with laser spectrometers is an advantage).
- Experimental skills and a careful, systematic approach to work
- Strong teamwork and communication skills; timely and reliable completion of tasks
- Demonstrable IT skills and experience in working with databases, programming skills are an advantage
- Very good written and spoken German and English language skills
