The Department of Biomaterials (Director Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Fratzl) at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPICI) in Potsdam, Germany invites applications from young scientists for the position of a PhD student (m/f/d) in civil engineering and/or architectural design.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student (m/f/d) with a background in civil engineering and / or architectural design.

The candidate should have a profile showing the following aspects:

  • High motivation
  • Ability for both independent and team work
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Completed academic education in civil engineering or architecture
  • Experiences in computational structural analysis
  • Further qualification in computational design and prototyping
  • Language skills in English in speech and writing

The MPI-CI combines scientific excellence with exceptional commitment in the supervision and support of young researchers. The position will be part of the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« in the project »Material Form Function« to investigate biomimetic support structures made of biogenic materials which are embedded in local ecosystems, such as forests. These investigations will be carried out using analogue experiments and models as well as digital simulations, such as the finite element method or the discrete element method, and will be closely linked to computational design methods. Experience in the design and implementation of full-scale architectural prototypes is desirable. The work is carried out in close cooperation with an interdisciplinary team of material scientists, designers and cultural scientists.

The position is available starting from 01.01.2023.
