YOUNG RESEARCHERS GÖTTINGEN

Complex Systems

Job Code: MPIDS-W060Job Offer from March 07, 2022

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPI-DS) at Göttingen, Germany, is an international, interdisciplinary and collaborative environment offering an exceptional research setting. It hosts a range of theoretical and experimental fundamental scientific research and a diverse group of researchers. Altogether, it employs about 300 people.

Within the Heisenberg Group of Peter Keim we seek to fill a PhD position (m/f/d).

The research

The project involves the experimental study of structure formation and of the emergence of topological defects when a system is driven through a second order phase transition with a finite cooling rate. The topological defect density in this non-equilibrium situation is described by the so-called Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), originally developed by Tom Kibble to describe the local symmetry breaking of the primordial Higgs field shortly after the Big Bang. W. Zurek transferred the formalism to quantum liquids, e.g. superfluid helium. In the present project, the KZM will be investigated in a colloidal system where the full phase space information of the ensemble is experimentally accessible. Further information can be found on the group homepage .

Your profile

For this research question, we are looking for a committed, communicative junior researcher (m/f/d).

Suitable candidates will have:

  • A Master’s degree in physics
  • Interest in statistical physics
  • Experimental skills and programming experience

Our offer

We are offering excellent working conditions in a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating research environment. Salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists. Working hours are fulltime; salary is 2/3 of E13 TVöD-Bund. Furthermore, we offer opportunities regarding work life balance as well as health promotion services. The PhD position is limited to three years. The starting date is flexible.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to achieving the highest level of excellence and diversity.
