The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The Department is divided into four units with more than 190 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science you will be part of a dynamic environment with work being done in leading research areas and with a strong international profile.

Project description
A postdoctoral fellow is being recruited to lead research activities in the new INQUIRE project. This is major Horizon Europe project that includes a broad consortium from 20 global universities and research organizations. The aims of INQUIRE are to protect citizen health by providing knowledge, tools, and measures that substantially improve indoor air quality. We will conduct research and evaluate innovative actions to detect and reduce hazardous chemical determinants in homes, with a focus on exposure of infants and young children in over 200 homes distributed across 8 countries.

Main responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Professor Jonathan Martin and Dr. Stefano Papazian in the Exposure & Effects Unit, Department of ACES. The successful candidate will work primarily at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) with a diverse research group and in collaboration with the National Facility for Exposomics. A major responsibility will be to establish sample workflows and analytical conditions for sensitive contaminant detection and discovery using GC- and HPLC-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry. You will also have the responsibility to clean and prepare passive air samplers for deploying in homes across Europe, and with their subsequent extraction to support nontarget analysis (in house) and toxicological assays (by partners in the consortium). You will also participate in integrating the chemical and toxicological data in a virtual effects-directed analysis (vEDA), and prioritize unknown substances for MS/MS experiments and structural elucidation. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to plan, conduct, interpret and communicate the research and results.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry. Previous research experience in high resolution mass spectrometry, metabolomics or exposomics will be considered a great asset, as will the ability to interpret large mass spectrometry datasets using open software such as R or Python.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date in September 2022 or as per agreement.
