The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary basic research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 230 people, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university. But it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. The city of Jena has an active student scene and a diverse cultural life. We are looking for a Research and Development Engineer (m/f/d) in full-time, part-time possible, temporary for 3.5 years.

Background and position description

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena has a vacancy for a Research and Development Engineer. This is a position with predominant tasks (60 percent) for the temporarily funded EU project Q-Arctic (see: here and here), which is assigned to the Service Group Field Experiments and Instrumentation (see here). The service group, which also includes a mechanics and an electronics workshop and is responsible for an experimental greenhouse, works closely with staff from the scientific departments. The group supports them in the planning, realization and continuous operation of extensive measuring equipment in the field, in the laboratory and in the greenhouse. Within the framework of the Q-Arctic project, a new measuring tower will be installed in Arctic regions (possibly Canada / Sweden). Furthermore, extensive permanent measurements will be carried out in the coming years. During individual measurement campaigns, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) will also be used for atmospheric measurements and remote sensing programs.

Your tasks

  • Designing, developing, installing and commissioning various complex measuring systems and metrological components as well as energy supply systems for the EU project Q-Arctic
  • Development of complex measuring systems in the field and in the laboratory
  • Maintenance and inspection as well as modernization and modification of existing complex outdoor measuring equipment
  • Maintenance, inspection and retrofitting of existing weather stations
  • Planning and documentation of projects


Your profile

  • Successfully completed university education (FH) as an engineer in the field of electrical engineering, environmental engineering or measurement technology or comparable qualifications
  • Demonstrable experience in electrical engineering, environmental engineering or measurement technology
  • Knowledge in the use of modern CAD software and software for electronics/electrical engineering
  • Knowledge in setting up measuring installations is an advantage
  • Driving license class B, MS Office knowledge
  • Good knowledge of the German and English languages, both written and spoken
  • Distinct ability to work in a team and intercultural competence as well as service orientation
  • Initiative and sense of responsibility
  • High flexibility and resilience with very good time and priority management
  • a goal-oriented, binding, structured way of working, organizational talent
  • Interest in working with scientists in a research institution
  • Willingness to undertake longer business trips to climatically challenging regions in Germany and non-European countries

Part-time work is possible in principle. If the requirements of the collective agreement are met, the position will be graded according to TVöD Bund up to pay group 11; in addition, we provide a pension scheme based on the public service (VBL).
