The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University is divided into three divisions: Mathematics, Mathematical statistics, and Computational Mathematics. The Division of Computational Mathematics carries out research in a wide range of topics including numerical analysis, computational biology and dynamic stochastic systems.

Project description
Ice sheets melt in contact with warm ocean water, which contributes to rising sea levels. The input of cold, fresh glacier water into the ocean also modifies ocean currents. The nonlinear feedback mechanisms in ice-ocean interaction are important to understand for reliable predictions of responses to climate change, but are at the same time notoriously difficult to model. Simulations of the physical processes are sensitive to numerical approximation techniques, are often subject to instabilities and set high demands on computing power. This project is about developing a finite element model for ice-ocean interaction that can be used to better understand how the circulation in the Sherard Osborn fjord near Greenland is impacted by interaction with the Ryder glacier.  The project is part of a  collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and Department of Meteorology.

Main responsibilities
The researcher will build on an existing FEniCS-based finite element model. The researcher is expected to first improve the finite element discretization so that the model runs stably and accurately, diminishing so-called overshoots in temperature and salinity. Then the researcher should further-develop the model so that it can represent strong variations in bathymetry as well as coupling to a moving ice shelf. The researcher is expected to collaborate and exchange knowledge with collaborators at the Department of Meteorology (MISU).

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. 

The ideal applicant has experience in: 

  • Finite Element Methods 
  • FEniCS 
  • Applications in geophysics, in particular experience of modeling ice sheets and/or the ocean.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of one year, with the possibility of extension for another six months. Start date 2022-08-01 or as per agreement.
