Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

At the Section of Radiology, Department of Surgical Sciences, Uppsala University, education and research is pursued within the topic Radiology. The main emphasis is on diagnostics and intervention with radiological methods. The topic includes clinical as well as experimental studies. In these studies x-ray radiation, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, positron emission tomography (PET) and ultrasound is used.

One project within the division concerns studies of diabetes by use of advanced image analysis techniques that integrates imaging and non-imaging data including clinical and genetic information. The project is entitled: Large-scale Imaging Studies of Associations and Causality of Body Composition in Relation to Type 2 Diabetes and will be performed within the research school at Uppsala Diabetes Center, UDC (https://www.uu.se/forskning/udc/) and include imaging and study data from UK Biobank (https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/), and SCAPIS (www.scapis.org) and a sister study to the SCAPIS-study referred to as the IGT-microbiota study.

Duties
In this project you will work with methods for automated analysis of CT and whole-body MRI data from three large scale cohorts will be applied and further developed. In the analyses, you will focus on finding relations between the imaging data and non-imaging data relevant for type 2 diabetes (T2D), such as blood glucose level and genetic data. You will get to work with methods previously developed and applied in the research group -Imiomics, deep learning, and so-called cohort salience mapping. In this project, you will also be a part of extending these methods to find causal relations between the imaging data and T2D.

By this, you will help to answer the research plan’s main research questions:

  • How is body composition associated with T2D and measures of glucose metabolism?
  • How well can image data alone and in combination with non-imaging data predict who already has or will develop T2D and what body features are most important in these predictions?
  • Is genetics of T2D causally related to body composition?
  • Is body composition causally linked to T2D?

The position is for maximum 5 years and includes courses and a maximum of 20 % department duties.

Requirements
The candidate should have a master’s degree in an area relevant to the PhD topic. We are looking for a person both interested in applying existing techniques to answer medical questions as well as developing the analysis technologies further.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §1-7, and in the Uppsala University’s rules and guidelines, at http://regler.uu.se/Rules_and_regulations_in_English/. There are university guidelines regarding salary level.

Additional qualifications
A strong background in medical imaging, medical image analysis, bioinformatics, biomedicine, or medicine, is a plus. Knowledge in diabetes, genetics, and statistical analysis using for example Stata, R or similar are meriting.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University’s rules and guidelines.
