At the School of Education, Culture and Communication (UKK) our students mainly study programmes relating to teacher education, but we also offer programmes and courses in languages and communication, mathematics/applied mathematics, physics, music and opera as well as the preparatory technical foundation year. Would you like to work as a senior lecturer at Sweden’s newest University? We are now advertising for twelve associate senior lecturer positions for those who want to build our future. You will contribute to the development of our University and also to our country.

As an associate senior lecturer at MDU you will conduct research and teach. Together with other associate senior lecturers you will be part of our continuing professional development programme and will be offered a mentor, educational training and doctoral supervisor training.

An associate senior lecturer is a career-development position for those who have recently successfully defended their doctoral thesis and which forms a clear career path towards permanent employment as a senior lecturer. Upon completion of your employment as an associate senior lecturer you have the right to be promoted to a senior lecturer position for an indefinite period.

Position description

A position as Associate Senior Lecturer is a fixed-term merit-rated appointment of at least four and at no more than six years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 12a.

The purpose of the employment is that the teacher shall be given the opportunity to develop his or her autonomy as a researcher and to become qualified both academically and pedagogically to fulfil the requirements for appointment as a Senior Lecturer.

At MDU there is a lively environment in mathematics, including teaching and research oriented towards applied areas such as finance and engineering. We now want to further strengthen our group by recruiting an associate senior lecturer in mathematics/applied mathematics. The position is one of twelve associate senior lecturer positions announced by MDU. You will play an important role in the work of strengthening the research environment MAM (mathematics/applied mathematics) and developing our programmes.

The work assignments comprise:

  • Research in the field of mathematics with relevance for the research environment MAM (mathematics/applied mathematics). Employment includes 60% research time.
  • Work with applications for external research funding.
  • Contribution to collaboration and co-production with the surrounding society.
  • Teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and postgraduate level. This may involve teaching at the university’s two campus locations, Västerås and Eskilstuna, as well as distance teaching.
  • Development of the bachelor’s and master’s programs in engineering and financial mathematics and of the mathematics courses in the engineering programs at the university.
  • Supervision and examination at undergraduate, advanced, and postgraduate level.

Future duties may include administrative and managerial assignments, for example programme coordination or project management.

Qualification requirements

The qualification requirements for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are primarily a degree of Doctor, or equivalent academic skills, no more than five years before the closing date for application for the post of Associate Senior Lecturer has expired.

A person who has a degree of Doctor, or has previously acquired equivalent skills may, however, be considered if there are particular reasons for this. Such particular reasons may leave of absence on account of illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Special qualification requirements for this employment include:

  • Active research in mathematics/applied mathematics.
  • Ability to carry out assignments in a structured and well-organized way.
  • Good teamwork skills.
  • A good command of the English language.

The applicant should have completed ten weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. A person appointed as an Associate Senior Lecturer but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training within two and a half years. The course in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks of training.

Assessment criteria

In general terms the assessment criteria shall be based on the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to fulfil the duties well.

With regard to the nature of this merit-rated employment, the applicant’s academic and teaching merits will be assessed above all in respect of quality. A quantitative precedent of an applicant, which can be explained by the applicant having worked for a longer period, will therefore not be decisive. Same attention shall be paid to the assessment of teaching skills as to the assessment of academic skills.

Special emphasis is placed on the quality of completed teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels in higher education.

Another basis for assessment is quality of applicant’s research in mathematics/applied mathematics and its relevance for research environment MAM (mathematics/applied mathematics). The applicant must have a research profile that fits into one of the research groups within MAM. More information can be found below about:

Documented ability to plan, publish, and inform about research is also assessed. The research should be internationally recognized.

You need to have good teamwork skills as the tasks require collaboration both internally at the academy and with other academies and sections of MDU.

As an associate senior lecturer, you need to be able to work independently and to have a structured and well-organized way of working, have the ability to work with many different tasks in parallel and independently prioritize and plan your work. You should be able to express yourself well in speech and writing in English.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Merit

Qualifications considered to be a merit include:

  • Documented ability to acquire funds for research.
  • Experience in supervision and examination at undergraduate and advanced level.
  • Experience in teaching of mathematics to students whose main area of study is not mathematics.
  • Experience in administrative or managerial assignments, e.g. programme coordination.
  • Experience in using Matlab, Latex, Zoom and Canvas (or other learning platforms).
  • Good knowledge of Swedish.

On promotion to a post as senior lecturer

At the end of the employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer the applicant has the right to considered for employment as a Senior Lecturer. 

To be qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer the applicant must have demonstrated the academic skills and teaching abilities required for the appointment. Academic skills may also have been demonstrated by the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration in joint projects of benefit to academia and industry/the public sector/society in general and through the ability to disseminate research. The assessment of teaching skills shall apply to the planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Teaching skills shall be well documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.

The application for promotion must have been received no later than six months before the end of the employment period. At the time of promotion to senior lecturer the applicant must have completed a qualifying course in higher education pedagogy.
