The Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a 15 month postdoctoral position in the project How to be happy in times of turmoil? to be filled by 1st of January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter

Job content  
The postdoc will contribute to the research project How to be happy in times of turmoil? The re-discovery of Danish philosopher Birgitte Thott (1610-1662) and her neo-stoic treatise Om Weyen till et Lycksalligt Liff (c. 1659).

The postdoc’s task will be to collaborate with the PI in the production of a critical edition of Thott’s treatise.  The critical edition will include an introduction to the work, an English translation of Thott’s treatise, and a scholarly commentary.

The project is located in the Section for Philosophy.  The postdoc will be affiliated with the History of Philosophy Research Group in the Section for Philosophy and the interdisciplinary research group Thinking the European Republic of Letters in the Centre for Modern European Studies (CEMES).

The internationally renowned Section for Philosophy is part of the Department of Communication. The department is home to approx. 80 faculty members, 40 PhD students, 20 postdocs, 40 part-time lecturers, 27 administrative staff, and 2200 students. The department annually generates approx. 30 million DKK in external research funding, and it produces research and scholarship that is world leading, and which sets the agenda for many national initiatives and conversations.

Qualification requirements

In order to be considered for the position applicants must have research qualifications at least corresponding to what can be achieved as part of a successfully completed PhD within a relevant field.

The candidate shall furthermore have:

  • expertise in history of philosophy
  • high proficiency in both Danish and English.

In the assessment it will be considered an advantage if the candidate has:

  • familiarity with either the history of women’s thought, Danish intellectual history, or the history of Stoic philosophy.
  • experiences with editorial work and manuscripts and familiarity with early modern Danish texts.

Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The Faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and English can be expected to be assessed.

Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the appointment committee.  All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Salary and conditions of employment
Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary range starts at app. DKK 35,600, app. (EUR 4,800) + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.

The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have further agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, whereby the pension contribution will be paid out as salary.
