The Division for Sustainability, Society & Economics at DTU Management offers a postdoc position in the Climate Economics and Risk Management section.
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated economist with an interest in participating in cutting-edge research within the value of providing and using climate risk information, including economic and other social aspects, as a basis for coping with extreme climate events including flooding, wildfires and storms in a European context. The position is initially offered for 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The research will, as part of a strong Danish and European interdisciplinary team, focus on welfare impacts of climate hazards including direct economic costs, wider welfare impacts, health and equity aspects.
You will divide your time between two related research actions funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Framework including the ClimateEurope2 project, which aims to producing and testing high quality climate information with users, whereas the DRYADS project focuses on creating a holistic fire management ecosystem to protect against wildfires. Both projects are just starting to imply that our research team will have a lot of freedom in planning our activities. The research activities in the Section for Climate Economics and Risk Management are highly interdisciplinary and you will become part of a collaborative team effort spanning the full research chain – from climate hazards through impact and risk assessment to economics and adaptation.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The postdoc will have two major focus points:
- You will explore the economic benefits and other values of using high quality climate information in Europe based on quantitative and qualitative methods including avoided damage costs, adaptation costs, return on investments and other climate risk indicators such as health impacts, biodiversity, historical- and cultural values. This will be done in close collaboration with stakeholders and project partners. In-depth assessments and co-knowledge production will be conducted in a number of case studies in Europe. Quantitative modelling tools on costs and other social impacts developed within our section will also be further developed and applied to the case studies.
- In line with the research described above, you will also contribute to the development and application of methods for assessing the damages and risks of wildfires in economic terms under both past (forensic analyses), present (emergencies, prevention) and future (adaptation) climate conditions at detailed spatial level in Europe.
The ideal candidate should have:
- A PhD degree in general or environmental economics or similar qualifications
- Experience with quantitative studies of the economics of climate risks and associated environmental issues including sustainable development
- Excellent communication skills
- Well-developed ability to work individually and in a group
- A willingness and desire to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Good programming capabilities in advanced analysis software (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, etc.) and/or experience with GIS and spatial analyses is an advantage
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The period of employment is two years, starting as soon as possible (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
